A Chinese Ming dynasty painted and glazed pottery figure of a musician, dating to 1368 – 1644 AD. A decorative example of the type in superb condition, free from the deceptive restorations that plague the market in Chinese antiquities.

This smiling figurecarries a drum in his left hand; he wears a long dark blue gown which reaches down to his boots, the sleeves, belt andthe sides of his coat are coloured in a wonderful sea blue.Standing on an integral plinth, he wears a tall red hat with a small brim.

The musician figures of the Ming dynasty give us a wonderful sense of the energy of life in medieval China. Musicians were often employed for festivals, feasts and processions that marked important events in wealthy individuals\' lives.

The Chinese of all epochs seemed to have been firm believers of life after death: an abundance of similar figurines depicting scenes from everyday life were frequent accompaniments of high class burials, ready to serve their masters in the afterlife.
