Exceedingly rare - maybe the only one in existence - early Morse Code Register or Recorder manufactured by Partrick & Bunnell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in working condition.

The manufacturer of this rare Register is Partrick, Bunnell & Co., 38 S. Fourth St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was only in business for three years, from 1872-1875. The company manufactured a general line of telegraphy equipment. This register appears to be the same instrument as the instrument attributed to Charles T. Chester of 1855 pictured on the sparkmuseum.com website; to see that image, click here!

According to the sparkmuseum.com website, the instrument is an \"Early S.F.B. Morse Design, Weight Driven Telegraph Register.\" The individual who patented the first morse code register was Morse himself. The patent with the title, \"IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRO - MAGNETIC TELEGRAPHS\"was issued on April 11, 1846 with the number 4,453. See entire Patent further down after the pictures. Morse improved his registerand was issued patent number 6,420 on May 1, 1849 with the title, \"IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRIC TELEGRAPHS.\"

Jesse H. Bunnell

The instrument offered here has the curved frame as they were in fashion around the mid 1860\'s, as you can see in one of the next patentsissued to Robert Henning of Ottawa, Illinois. Henning\'s patent bears the number 42,253 and was issued on April 5, 1864, but showsan improvement not yet incorporated in the instrument offered here. Please find images of all these patents above. Jesse H. Bunnell was born in Massillon, Ohio in 1843. Only 11 years old, he started working as a messenger in the telegraph office in Massillon where he eventually learned to operate telegraphy apparatus. Starting in 1859 he started working as an operator in Columbus and Crestline Ohio, Wheeling West Virginia, Sandusky Ohio, and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. At the age of 18, he joined the army during the civil war and was a member of the army of the Potomac at the headquarters of McCLellan and Burnside. To read more about Bunnell\'s time during the civil war, click here!

In 1872, he and James Partrick formed the business, Partrick, Bunnell & Co. in Philadelphia, PA, as a manufacturer and dealer of telegraph and electrical instruments. He was later associated with the New York telegraph manufacturer L.G. Tillotson & Co. In 1878, he started his own company, the J.H. Bunnell & Co. in New York City, and in 1879 formed a partnership with Charles McLaughlin.
The telegraph-history.org website has an interesting piece about Partrick and Bunnell, to read about it, click here!

Bunnell was later a major manufacturers of fire alarm telegraphy equipment and is mostly known for his activities in this field. Bunnell died on February 8, 1899, at age 56. His company kept operating and is still in business to this day.
I personally was not able to find another record of an early weight driven register signed with his name or with his named combined with the Partrick name. This Register is in working condition. The magnet wingdings are somewhat loose and need some attention. In case you intend to re-wire the magnets, I do have NOS wire if the right gauge, gauge 22, see pictures # 25, 26, and 27. Let me knwo if you need this wire and I will include it at no charge. It is DOUBLE SILK INSULATED MAGNET WIRE, SUPERIOR INSULATION, GAUGE 22, 1/2lb, SOLID WIRE. The base of this Register measures 12-1/4 by 5-1/4 inches.

This Register as a true museum piece and belongs into a museum or into the hands of a serious collector !
