Up for sale is this brass Ships bell / clock measuring 5 in diameter by approximately 3 ½” deep. The dial is embossed “CHELSEA SHIP’S BELL” and “JOHN E. HAND & SONS PHILADELPHIA”, which refers to one of Philadelphia’s premier jewelry stores.
Embossed on the back rim is serial number 172720. A manufacturers plate, affixed to the back, readsPATENT’DDEC 31 1901NO. 689899CHELSEA CLOCK CO.BOSTON U.S.A.
The clock keeps perfect time and chimes on the hour and half hour. However, regarding the chimes, the clock makes a series of differing chimes on the hour/half hour that makes no sense to me. I am assuming it needs to be ‘reset’ or ????
