ANTIQUE MINER’S LAMP FROM 1900
AMERICAN SAFETY LAMP SCRANTON PA.
COMES FROM HOLDEN MINE, NORTH TAYLOR, PA.
Description

Up for sale is this antique Miner’s Safety Lamp, manufactured around 1900 by the American Safety Lamp & Mine Supply Company of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The story of the lamp: My grandfather arrived in America in September 1902; he was 20 at the time and had worked before in Germany in a coal mine. He moved to the town of Taylor, Pennsylvania and started working at the Holden Coal Mine in his profession. Friends of his family had moved to Taylor some years before so he had a place to go and find work.

According to family history a mining disaster happened in March 1907 at the Holden Coal Mine when it came to an explosion which killed a number of miners. Grandfather was in the mine when it happened but survived the accident without injury but a major shock. He quit mining the year after. Nobody in my family ever got into mining and grandpa moved to New Hampshire right after quitting his mining job. Somehow he retained his mining lamp of the day of the accident and kept it all his life as a memento. I never met my grandfather; he passed away before I was born.

The lamp passed on to my dad and when he passed away in 1996 I inherited it. All my life I heard the story associated with the lamp and there came a point where the story became so old and stale that I did not want to hear it any longer. My own children are not interested in the lamp and I am hard up so I am selling it now.

The lamp was manufactured by American Safety Lamp & Mine Supply Company of Scranton, Pennsylvania around 1900. It is made of solid brass with a heavy aluminum tank and weights approx. 2 lbs. It is complete with copper wire mesh in the upper part of the shielded cylinder, tank, wick, wick adjuster and glass. The glass is very thick; it is safety glass. There is a longitudinal crack in the glass; I was told it happened when the explosion tumbled the lamp to the mine floor.

It is an Antique and has not been cleaned or touched in decades. Grandpa was the last person who kept it clean so you are dealing with the patina and dust of at least 65 years!

This lamp with its history has deserved a museum or a collector’s home. I hope it will find the right person who appreciates it!PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER LISTINGS OF ANTIQUE, VINTAGE AND COLLECTIBLE ITEMS!
