Offered is a very nice large Maidu Indian basket from Northern California dating from the late 1800\'s to early 1900\'s. This Maidu basket was woven in the shape of a spittoon and is made of peeled red bud for the foundation, using Western red bud for the pattern. It measures 14 inches in diameter x 7 inches tall. The basket is in very good sturdy condition. There are no missing stitches on the rim. There are approximately eight single stitches missing on the body of the basket, but they do not detract from the overall appearance of the basket. There are some missing stitches on the bottom of the basket commensurate with wear and age, as shown in the closeup photo. There is slight discoloration to the inside bottom of the basket. This is a beautifully woven antique California Maidu Indian basket, with an extremely rare shape, and would make a wonderful addition to any Native American Indian basket collection.
