A decorated Stoneware Canning or Storage Jar, Southwestern Pennsylvania origin, ca.1880. A well-thrown, mostly straight-sided cylindrical form with heavily-tooled rim and shoulder. Front features four large horizontal stripes in bold Brushed Cobalt. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior, Albany or Mineral Slip interior. There appears to be a primitive initial (or maybe a 4?) inscribed on the backside (see close-up, photo #7), but unmarked otherwise.
Condition: Very Good to Excellent overall with wonderful form and bold, contrasting color. A very faint, 1.5"L rim hairline on the right side (see close-up photo #6), and small unglazed area on the third stripe down noted for descriptive accuracy. Displays brilliantly; this "Striper" will not disappoint. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Desirable size; roughly 1-Quart to the upper shoulder. Measures approximately 8-1/8"H x 5"W overall with a base diameter of 4-5/8". The inner and outer rim diameters are approximately 3-1/2" and 4-3/4", respectively. Relatively heavy for the size at 3.5 lbs.
