The Art Nouveau period was famous for it\'s timeless handcrafted design work! The Art Nouveau Era was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" which in French translates to \"A Beautiful Time\".
During the Art Nouveau period, organic world based designs were popular, long flowing lines, hair, vines, or bug types of jewelry. This piece is a classic example of this period in jewelry history.
Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver first formed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refined by hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as an eye-catching treasure.
The chasing technique is a very difficult silversmith process when the artist uses a nail like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns within the metal work. This process was very difficult and only the best jewelers were trained in the process.
Sapphires have long been prized for both their rarity and beauty. They are considered one of the four precious gemstones along with Rubies, Diamonds & Emeralds. Long have Sapphires adorned royal jewelry and reserved for the wealthiest of clients.
The proper name of the miner cut is old mine cut. The original old mine cut diamonds of the 19th century were referred to by this name because the jewels came from the old diamond mines in India rather than South Africa, which dominates the diamond industry today.
In the 19th century, artisans shaped each mine cut diamond by hand. All diamonds remained hand-cut until the early 1900\'s. Due to the handcraftsmanship, each diamond was unique and no two cuts were identical, unlike today\'s diamonds which undergo machine-assisted cutting processes.
