The History
The Art Nouveau era, 1890-1910, was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" in French, which translates to \"A Beautiful Time.” This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first world war, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry.
The Jugendstil movement is the name of an artistic Renaissance that appeared in the late 19th century in southern Germany. This emerging art (also known as Art Nouveau in France, modernismo in Spain, Sezessionsstil in Austria, Stile Liberty or Stile Floreale in Italy) was artistically elegant and stylistically revolutionary. The Jugendstil style is most well-known for using themes from nature, particularly floral and plant motifs. As the movement progressed, geometric designs which continued to include nature motifs became more common. Theodor Farhner, Josef Hoffmann, Heinrich Levinger, Robert and Louis Koch, and Wiener Werkstaatte were popular designers and creators of the Jugendstil style.
Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure.
The Old European Cut was the last type of diamond to be cut completely by hand. It was the successor of the Old Mine Cut diamond and the predecessor of the modern round brilliant cut. The Old European Cut was very popular during the Edwardian and Art Deco eras. It is round and has a high crown and more facets than previous cuts, giving these stones a high sparkle. These diamonds are very rare today, as most were re-purposed, and cut into more modern shapes.
Diamond is derived from the Greek work, “adamas”, which means “unbreakable.” Diamonds are extremely rare, with the earliest diamonds being discovered in India around the 4th century BC and being traded along the Silk Road; the trade route between India and China. During the latter half of the 18th century, diamonds were discovered in South Africa. Diamonds are renowned for their strength and brilliance of color and ability to reflect and disperse light. This is what gives them such a brilliant sparkle. Colors range in blue, yellow, brown, green, purple, pink, orange, and red; the less color a diamond has, the higher its grade is. Diamonds range from 1 billion to 3.5 billion years old, and because of their age and qualities, have become the symbol for love across many cultures.
