The foliate pattern was created using the repousse method of hammering an image from the reverse side, and features scrolling leaves, scalloped edges, and dainty flowers along the ends. The brooch is accented by beautiful semi-translucent dark blood red Bohemian garnets, which graduate in size while curving along the center part of a leaf, adding depth and dimension to this piece. The garnets are rose cut, which allows light to reflect off the stones, and they are set in decorative milgrain bezel settings. The brooch is completed with two finely etched tassels, which dangle from a delicate box chain from the right side of the piece. The brooch has a working open \"c\" clasp and can be worn multiple ways, making this piece very versatile. Don\'t miss your chance to own this rare and stunning piece of history.Damage: Age appropriate wear. There is a small hole at the top, which was created to allow steam to vent when the piece was made. There are a few minuscule holes along the left scrolling leaf, but this does not affect wear, and the piece is still beautiful as is.

The History
This piece was made during the Georgian era! This era is known for its hand-crafted designs, which were heavily influenced by world exploration. A few signatures of this era were high karat gold, cameos, chatelaine accessories, foil-backed stones, rivière necklaces, memento mori and mourning jewelry, and rose and mine cut diamonds. While the jewelry from this era began to see designs from all over the world, jewelry from abroad was still very expensive to acquire. Hefty price tags were due to imported jewelry having to be procured by sea on slow-moving ships. Between age and difficulty of acquirement, jewelry from the Georgian era are rare finds and amazing pieces of history.
The late Baroque or Rococo period prevailed in the 18th century. The period was known for its strong use of asymmetrical designs, curves, gold, and witty, whimsical themes. Both men and women at court wore sparkling gemstones set in gold during this period, as well as colorless glass pastes and pearls. Colored gems were often highly foiled behind them to enhance the depth of color. Jewelry was often created with naturalistic, floral designs. Rococo jewelry also featured embossed and engraved floral and feather designs on metal.
Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure.
Milgrain is a technique which dates back over 2,000 years but became a benchmark style of the Art Deco era, as it was very popular during this time. The term is derived from the French, “mille-grain”, meaning “a thousand grains.” Jewelry with milgrain usually includes a row of metal beads, typically used as a border, which are set closely together. Milgrain beads were individually made and then meticulously applied to each piece
Bohemian Garnet is transparent or translucent mineral of a dark red hue. Bohemian Garnets were mined starting in the 16th century in the Bohemian Hills of Czechoslovakia. During the Victorian and Art Deco eras, this type of garnet reached a height of popularity. There are no known mines in existence today, which has made the remaining stones highly coveted.
