Notable Features:This brooch was handmade during the Art Nouveau era. The brooch features a large angel skin coral carving, which was hand-carved into a Gibson Girl style sculpted head. The coral showcases a lovely blush pink hue with a blend of cream throughout. The coral has slightly darker pink undertones, which further enhances the hues of the piece. The coral is intricately carved with details of the woman\'s face and hair, which is worn in an updo. Surrounding the hair is an 18k yellow gold crown and a smooth polished granulated bead, adding a regal sense to the carving. Around the woman\'s neck are 18k yellow gold accents, which could represent part of a high-necked dress. The 18k yellow gold accents have a Florentine finish for added detail and depth. The scrolling leaf and vine filigree backing of the brooch was custom made to support the carving perfectly. No detail of this brooch is left unfinished, lending to the mastery of the artisan who made this piece. The brooch is finished with a sturdy locking \"c\" clasp and can be worn many ways, including on a lapel, hat, scarf, or other form of accessory. It would look especially attractive as a pendant, which can be converted easily by your local jeweler. Don\'t miss your opportunity to own this elegant Art Nouveau piece!

The Art Nouveau era, 1890-1910, was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" in French, which translates to \"A Beautiful Time.” This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry.
Filigree metalworking is a delicate form of art and has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metalworking processes. Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia.
Angelskin coral varies in color with white, pink, and orange hues and is a type of precious coral. Angel skin coral is harvested from the South China and East China seas, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. During the Art Deco period, only the richest of the rich could afford to have this form of coral harvested and imported to Europe and North America to be made into jewelry.
