WelcomeFellow Vintage and Antique Halloween and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts! Many of you know us as longtime collectors andsellers of vintage and antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day andEaster holiday memorabilia, antique dolls, old toys and lovely old china andglassware. We feel that wonderful change in the air! Soon it will be time for autumn … crunchyfalling leaves, crackling fires, warm apple cider, and … Hallowe'en! Yay!For your all-year-long Hallowe'en loving pleasure, we are proud to present anabsolutely SPOOKtacular, desirable and all-original devil Jack o' Lantern thatwas made in the 1930s by F.N. Burt of Buffalo, NY, USA!This American-made, pressed paper pulp Hallowe'en lantern is made from egg crate material orwhat many refer to as paper or papier mache. Please meet Lucifer! This is one of Ziz’s finest listings as she is presentingone of the most desirable lanterns ever made. Lucifer has incredible original bright paint, his original insert, and his original wire bale handle as well. He is in WICKEDly wonderful, very fine condition. He measures6 ½” tall (8 ½” to the top of his handle) x 5 ½” wide x 5 ½” deep. Notice the molded details here including his large and pointed Spock-like ears, his horns, and his unusually-colored insert featuring hot-pink as one of itscolors. Interesting to note is that the pulp has embossing to simulate flameson his back side! Lucifer’s colors include extremely-bright Hallowe'en orange, warm beige and green. His original paper insert is in colors of hot pink, black, green and neon yellow.

Ziz’s experience has taught her that this devil lantern, produced by F.N. Burt, wasmade in several color variations with a few different paper insert designs. Theexample she is presenting here is one of her very favorites. This 1930s SPOOKY-cool piece of Hallowe'en history is in superb condition forhis age. There are NO cracks or repairs to this lantern whatsoever. There issome wear to the holes placed to accommodate his wire bale handle and there isa tiny bit of pulp loss by each hole. The structure of this lantern is fine and FRIGHTfullyfabulous and is without major damage of any kind. Lucifer’s paper insert isoriginal and shows some loss when looking into his interior, no doubt from theglue that was used to adhere the paper insert to the pulp however, this doesnot show from the outside. His paper insert does have some tears but it iscomplete and he glows GHOULishly when illuminated with a battery-operated teacandle. His nose has a little wear commensurate with the many All Hallows' Evesthis DEVILISH dude has seen. There is a little bit of paint wear to the tips ofhis horns – however, his horns are present and show NO signs of damage. He doesnot have much indication of use for his intended purpose which was to light uphis family homes on dark and spooky Hallowe'en nights using a real wax candle. As Hallowe'en collectors know, one of the most desirable forms of imagery isthe devil. Because of his adult themed imagery and unsettling nature, he is known to be from theearlier days known as the Golden Age of Hallowe'en. One similar to him can be seen on page 29 of the outstanding reference bookentitled “Vintage Halloween Collectibles: Third Edition” by esteemed collector, expert and author Mark B. Ledenbach. Using his relative scarcity index Mark hasassigned the number “4” for this lantern, which means uncommon. As Markexplained, this lantern appears in the Butler Brothers catalog from 1932. Earlyversions were spray painted from below to give the lantern a faux-lit look. Weare so deeply honored and grateful that Mark invited us to showcase some of thepieces from our collection in this incredible book! Lucifer is an extremely desirable, attractive and hard-to-find piece of Hallowe'enhistory especially in his all-original condition. He would make an awesome addition toany collection of vintage and antique Hallowe'en memorabilia. If you enjoycollecting pieces in the finest original condition as we do, we think this HAUNTinglyhandsome Lucifer just might be the perfect acquisition for you! 🎃 Here is an interesting history of the F. N. Burt Company:F. N. Burt, an innovator in graphic design, began his business in August of1886, and was one of the most respected box manufacturers in the world. Thecompany experienced tremendous growth in the early 20th century that coincidedwith, as well as contributed to, the emergence of the stylized box as anadvertising vehicle for mass-produced consumer goods. Its 400,000 sq. ft.factory complex is entirely intact today - every building it ever constructedon Seneca Street from 1901-1927 still stands, and was added to The National Registerof Historic Places in 2013. We have included a present-day photo of the building. The company made a particularly groundbreaking move in 1909 when it hired afemale, Mary R. Cass, to be general manager of the plant - at a time when shewas forofferden to vote in national elections and women were unknown inleadership positions at American factories. Mary Cass, who almostsingle-handedly led the transformation of the small printing company to amanufacturing interest of world significance, was for the next twenty-fiveyears one of the country's leading business executives. Please remember Ziz’s motto: Eat, Drinkand Be Scary! No BONES about it, we have gone to BAT for you and SCARED up a great dealfor true Halloween DIE-hards!
