Civil War Model1860 CutlassOfficers Sword, most likely AMES
Sword overall is over31.25” long
Blade is about 25.5”
The guard has the numbers stampedin it as all the Ames swords had, this one is “ 24M “ and then “ 515 ‘” . The guard has a great patina to it butdoes have a rivet popped and about a 7/16” deep gash in it, perhaps fromanother sword strike in combat? (please see the pictures).
The blade has a darkergrey patina, and light pitting throughout, but no rust. There areno maker marks visible at the base of the blade, which I’m told is fairly typical ofAmes swords that have been cleaned a lot or rust removed because they werestamped fairly lightly compared to other makers. This blade had been cleaned ofrust a while back.Although cleaned, the blade has agood edge and shows it is an old one.
The grip is odd, asit appears to be painted pewter to stand up the saltwater mist. This is eitherperiod version rarely seen, or an old replacement. Since the grip pommel, andguard are loose and can come apart, the grip could very easily be replaced iffound not to be original.
There is not a scabbard with this sword.
Overall, this cutlass is in rough condition. Thiswas not a wall hanger, this was definitely a used sword, probably with someinteresting history, and would be a great piece to any collection.
