HISTORY

TheWright R-2160 Tornado was an experimental 42 cylinder, 7-bank, liquid-cooledinline radial aircraft engine. It was proposed to the Army in 1939 and thisprototype was produced in 1940. The engine generated 2,350 horsepower and wasdestined for aircraft under design at the time such as the Lockheed XP-58 ChainLightning, the Vultee XP-68 Tornado and the Republic XP-69 (any one of whichmight have been the fastest U.S Army Air Force piston fighter produced forWWII.)

The Tornado wasCurtiss-Wright’s last liquid-cooled piston engine and one of the most complexreciprocating power plants ever designed by any manufacturer. Cosmeticrestoration of this engine began in November 1989 and was completed in in March1991. The restoration included the installation of a cut-down Curtiss-Wrightelectric propeller which has a working pitch-change motor for demonstration tothe public. The engine was not restored to operating condition, andseller makes no warranties as to the condition and completeness of internalcomponents or the operability of any components whatsoever.

Only six examples of the Tornado were producedand, while they ran extensively in ground testing, they were never installed inany aircraft. By 1943 technical problems, and the rapidly approaching dawn ofthe jet age for military applications, effectively doomed the Tornado as far asseries production. All three candidate aircraft projects were ultimatelycancelled.

Since 1991 the Tornado hasbeen on public display at an air museum in NJ. This example is the lonesurvivor of the six built.

The sale winner willalso receive a copy of the book Tornado:Wright Aero’s Last Liquid-Cooled Piston Engine by Kimble D. McCutcheon, acomprehensive 214 page history of the Tornado project, which also tells thecomplete story of the surviving engine’s recovery and restoration.
