A fine largeold Northwest Coast Tsimshian Indian hand carved and painted totem pole circa 1930-40. The totem is the work of the famous carver Titus Campbell ( 1893-1966) who lived in carved in the Prince Rupert region of British Columbia. The totem features great well carved imagery featuring aThunderbird protecting a human, two wolf heads peering out between the ears of the seated bear who clutches a human captive. Titus is one of my favorite carvers from the mid 1900\'s , his imagery is always original and inspired in his carvings. Like the great old school carvers he most often hollowed out the backs of his totems. Another great example of his work is illustrated in Carvings and Commerce by Michael Hall and Pat Glascock on page 124 and illustrations #99. Beautifully carved and painted in great old and original pigments of yellow, blue -green, red, black and white. The totem stands a very respectable 18 3/4\" tall with a rectangular base measuring 4 1/3\" x 3 3/4\" square and is fully inscribed and signed by the artist to the reverse. \"Carved by Titus Campbell. Prince Rupert BC Thunderbird protecting Indian Bryde of the wolf tribe. Bear-human & slave\". This is a very fine totem that is in very good condition with a nice aged patina, some minimal paint wear all consistent with great age and careful handling. Great rare totem by a hard to find early master carver. This museum qualitytotem makes a impressive display item and a fine addition to anyone\'s collection.
