Rare and unique Gothic Black Forest oak carved clock surround commemorating the maritime disaster which befell the SS Volturno on 9th October 1913.
Stunning intricate and deep relief carved clock surround with head of the Green Man to top and with oak leaves, berries, nuts, fruits. Deeply carved on the clock face surround is the commemorative dedication 'Volturno 9 October 1913'. To the back of the carved clock surround deeply carved are the words: Presented By A.Winkel Carpenter. There is no mention on the clock surround of who this was presented to.
There is plentiful online information about this Ocean Liner. Volturno was on a voyage from Rotterdam to New York City. Mixed passengers and cargo - carrying highly flammable chemicals. The liner caught fire in a gale in the North Atlantic. SOS wireless signals attracted the response of 11 ships. 520 passengers and crew were rescued. The death toll - mainly women and children - was 136.
Measures some 24.5" height x 19.25" max width. The diameter of the space for clock face is 7.5" x 7.75"
