Great small saltglazed stoneware beer jug, London, Mortlake Pottery, 1820 - 1830
Price: US $46.00

An attractive saltglazed stoneware beer jug of small size decorated with various \'sprigs\' including trees, a windmill and a central Toby Fillpot figure; London, Mortlake Pottery, circa 1820 - 1830.

This attractive little beer jug has a ferruginous (iron rich) glaze on the upper part and a pale beige \'dip\' on the lower half. These little jugs are typically decorated with surface \'sprigs\' which were made in metal or clay molds and then pricked out onto the surface. The Toby Fillpot figure on the front of the jug is very vigorously modeled. Covering the sides are large trees and also a windmill.

This tiny jug is only 3 inches tall and in superb condition - no chips, cracks or restoration. For accuracy, there are three very tiny flakes on the rim. We think it is likely of Mortlake provenance. The sprigs found on this jug were commonly used at Mortlake. The handle has a nice early folded terminal (see photos provided). Thanks for offerding and good luck! !
