The company also produced‘badged’ machines for distributors in UK for various largeretailers. So, in UK this "Humboldt" model is known as "Regina Margherita".There were a few more German companies that used to produce copies of Grover & Baker No. 9 Stylemachines - some under the name "Rhenania"and also "Humboldt". It was Tittle & Nies,Saalfeld in 1863. That companyhas been sold to Adolf Knoch in 1911 andhis initials were stamped on the base underneath of machine. On those machines thethread was passingthru2 small disks on the top of needle bar a but on thismachine it goes thru the hole in the needle bar similar to the Original G&B#9 (see pic #12 for comparison) . Besides, this machine has the stamp"H"(Haid) underneath the base near the bobbin winder. The serial #96784 provides the clue that this machine has been manufactured in the middleof 1870th .

The name "Regina Margherita" was given tothis machine in the honor of Absolutely stunningly beautiful PrincessMargherita of Savoy(MargheritaMaria Teresa Giovanna (20 November 1851– 4 January 1926). She was theQueen Consort of Kingdom of Italy during thereign (1878–1900) of her husband Umberto I.She was a daughter of Prince Ferdinand ,Duke of Genoa and Princess Elizabeth of Saxony.Shemarried her first cousin Umberto, Prince of Piedmont, on 21 April 1868. On 11November 1869, Margherita gave birth to Victor Emmanuel,the future King ofItaly Victor Emmanuel III .On 9 January 1878, Umbertosucceeded as the new King of Italy. She became his Queen consort and remainedby his side for the rest of his reign when he get killed by anarchist GaetanoBresci on 29 July 1900.

Margheritaencouraged artists and writers and founded cultural institutions, notably theCasa di Dante and was a benefactor ofmany charities, especially Red Cross. On18 August 1893 Margherita climbed thePeak of Monte Rosa in theSwiss-Italian border, for the inauguration of thehouse built there and named after her. At4,554 metres theCapanna ReginaMargherita remains the highest hut inEurope. Margherita had the position of Honorary President of theLadies Alpine Club .In 1881,the mining town ofMargherita in Assam Indiawas named afterher. In 1906 the summit of Mount Stanley(the third highest mountain in Africa) was also named Margherita Peak in her honour.

Another very important information that all antique sewing machine should be aware of is that Haid und Neu company has a very special relationship with Singer SMC :

"...Until 1938 the majority of shares in thecompany were privately owned by the Strauss family. During 1940 the subsidiarycompany Maschinenbau Betz GmbH in Offenbach was purchased. After WWII therestitution of shares was made to the Strauss family in USA. In 1951 thecompany entered into a license and supply agreement with Singer Sewing MachinesAG, Frankfurt. And in 1958 having no further interest in the business, theysold to Singer SMC and renamed as Singer Nähmaschinenfabrik, Karlsruhe. At thesame time "Haid und Neu" name was taken over by the Maschinenbau Betzsubsidiary in Offenbach/Main, which continued to produce machines under theHaid und Neu brand until it was sold in 1963. As Singer took over, theKarlsruhe factory continued to make the old Haid und Neu designs which weremarketed as Singer models such as the 215G, 216G, 218G etc.After the factorywas refitted with the latest machinery for aluminium bodied machines, it becamea centre of excellence for complex machining and provided finished machinedbodies to other European Singer factories for final assembly.The factory wasrenamed again in 1967 as Singer Werke GmbH before it was finally closed in 1982".

MY PROCESS:In order to retain the authenticity of original time-honored design and those fine details which once embellished the antique sewing machines I am trying to avoid , unless it is really required due to the extremely neglected original condition, any repainting of machine metal parts , steel legs and treadles.Hereis the brief description of my process: If required, I am soaking all moving parts in WD-40 to get rid of that stubborn solidified whale oil, clean surface with Murphy’s oil soap, high speed polish chrome plated parts and apply a thin coat of a mixture of Boiled linseed oil & turpentine on the originally painted parts and re-assemble machine. The gear driven machines are being properly cleaned, greased and oiled, the timing is being checked , bobbin case or shuttle are being taken apart, cleaned and oiled for smooth thread draw, stitch adjusted to be equal on both sides. If appropriate for that particular model/class, machine is being tested to sew at slow and fast speeds and in reverse on numerous layers of denim to assure it is sewing with ease. For machines with motor /light /foot pedal control the following steps are being taken to assure that machine is electrically safe to operate: the motor, pedal, light wires, are inspected for electrical safety and replaced (if necessary) from the coils to the connector.The foot pedals are being cleaned and adjusted for smooth speed control. The machines I offer for sale are electrically safe and fully guaranteed to sew very well. Please feel free to ask any questions.

PACKAGING :

I will pack all items with a great care. I will appreciate your input prior the sale on how you want machine to be packed and I will try to satisfy your requirements . As the rule ,I will place the sewing machine’s head into the double-box and will use bubble wrap or rags inside the first box . If it would be a treadle or cabinet sewing machine , I will double-box machine’s head separately . I will disassemble cabinet / irons legs (if appropriate), then I will write the instruction with photo attachment of step-by-step assembly process to avoid any possible confusion during assembly . Or if it would be required, I could even crate the cabinet and will place and secure machine head in the double carton underneath. Please be aware that ONLY in that particular case some reasonable handling charges would be added to cover the cost of a pallet and wooden boards . I want to assure you I will do everything possible in accordance with your requirements to make sure that your purchase would be safe along the way. I put a lot of effort , time and quality materials into cabinetry restoration process and it would be extremely upsetting to me if the finished piece would be broken during transportation ..
