If you want to listen to some wild stories that seem far fetched sit around a marble show and it won\'t be long before some \"expert\" decides to educate you on the origin of some marble. I\'m not kidding you, I\'ve listened to some stories at shows that would make Cinderella seem like a documentary.
I couldn\'t help but think of this while preparing to list these marbles. The first marble is a true (according to definition) a hand made submarine. The light blue glass and the sunken bands really look kind of interesting. But only after years did I realize that a hand made submarine was actually considered to be a defective marble (the design was not to have the bands be inside the core) . I bought these marbles from an older guy whose grandmother and grandfather were from Germany. The grandfather had been given these marbles by his uncle. Originally, there were four marbles given to the grandfather. The other two were just like three two. They were given to another grandson. Anyway, this guy remembers his grandfather telling him that these marbles would come in boxes of twelve that were exported. On occasion. people from Germany would get some of these marbles and throw away the marbles where the bands were sunken in the core. The desirable marbles were the ones where the bands were totally on the outside of the marble. I\'ve seen prices for submarines go through the roof. I think they\'re neat marbles but nothing really exceptional. I wanted to include, at least by German standards at one time, what the most desirable marble was in Germany........a marble with all of the bands being on the outside. These two marbles have been together for a long time and provide a great example of how collectibles can be viewed differently depending on where you live or are from.
The submarine is 3/4th\'s plus. The marble with the bands on the top is 25/32nd\'s and lighter blue. Both have vibrant, stretched outer bands and ground pontils. The light blue marble has a melt mark near the pontil.
Please call with any questions or if you would like additional photographs. Thank you.
