This sale is for ORIGINAL Pre-WWI Uniforms and other items related to the US Army service of Private Mahlon Ira Carter of Pulaski, Tennessee. Until recently this grouping was housed in the archives of a museum where it was also on display for a number of years. It was very well taken care of and remains in an excellent state of preservation. Private Carter\'s family donated this collection to the museum and we can state with great certainty that this is the first time it has ever been offered on the open collector\'s market and made available to the general public. Everything we state in this description is Guaranteed 100% to the best of our knowledge and ability. According to Private Carter\'s draft registration card, he enlisted in the US Army Coastal Artillery Corps in or before 1914, other records show he spent most of his pre-WWI service at Fort Monroe, Virginia. Records also state that he served with the 157th Depot Brigade at Camp Gordon, Georgia and at Camp Meade, Missiouri prior to his service in France. During WWI it appears that HE SAW SERVICE IN FRANCE with the 60th and 73rd Coastal Artillery Corps. The 73rd served along the Marne and the 60th served in support of the 1st Army at Toul, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. His records make note of him serving overseas with the 166th Company Coastal Artillery Corps as well. He had quite an extensive term of service that has not been fully researched but the records you receive with this grouping provide excellent information and are more than enough to document the collection. It would be of great interest to know the full extent of his pre-war service. The provided research also documents everything we state in this description. This collection is in overall EXCELLENT CONDITION and is a truly amazing find. It is absolutely beautiful and makes for a striking and eye catching display. The grouping includes Private Carter\'s Complete Model 1907 Khaki Uniform, Model 1902 Dress Tunic with Breast Cord & Visor Cap, Two Photos of Private Carter in Uniform, Three Photos of Soldiers & Officer\'s Marching and Encamped, Two Model 1902 60th Artillery Collar Insignia, One 73rd Artillery Cap Device, One 73rd Artillery Collar Disc, One Artillery Collar Insignia, Once small silk WWI Armistice Souvenir, One WWI In Memory Post Card and Eight (8) Pages of Very Informative Modern Research. Please Read Entire Description. 1. Pre-WWI US Army Artillery Model 1902 Enlisted Dress Tunic & Breast Cord - EXCELLENT CONDITION - This tunic is complete with its Original Near Mint Condition Brest Cord! The cord maintains excellent, near perfect color and has no visible defect or flaws. The tunic shows only light signs of age, wear and use. It maintains excellent very dark blue color with No Fading, No Soiling and No Staining. This entire collection was in the archives and on display at museum in Tennessee for many years. It maintains its museum accession tag stitched to the rear of the liner. The museum stitched closed three very small moth nips. Two to the center left of the back and one to the rear of the left sleeve near the elbow. The repairs are professionally done and very hard to see. They are only visible under close inspection. The tunic maintains all of its Original Model 1902 Rimless Buttons in excellent condition and remaining firmly stitched to the tunic. It also maintains it Original Model 1902 73rd Artillery and \"US\" Collar Insignia in excellent condition as well. All Artillery Piping remains BRIGHT Red and unfaded. Both sleeves have red service chevrons and the right sleeve bears the bright red artillery shell insignia all in excellent condition and as firmly stitched to the tunic as the day they were sewn on. There are several small spots of wear to the piping on the rear of the tunic. There are three small spots to the lower piping on the collar, the largest is approximately an inch long. There is also a small spot of light wear to the piping at the rear of the right cuff. NONE of this detracts from the tunic when displayed. Overall, the front of the tunic is Very Near Perfect! No defects are visible to the front torso, collar or sleeves and it is truly beautiful tunic! The interior is also in Excellent Condition with only very minor signs of age and wear. The liner is also excellent. The rear of the liner maintains its Original Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot tag with a Manufacture Date of 1912 stamped in red and still visible! As previously stated the rear of the liner also has a museum accession tag stitched to it with tracking number and other information. There is one small spot of loose stitching to the bottom of the liner that is approximately an inch long where it meets the wool to the lower front inside the coat. It is in no way visible when the coat is displayed. By MY Measurements this tunic is a SIZE 40 Long. The Measurements Are: CHEST = 20 Inches From Armpit to Armpit Across the Chest when Buttoned and Laying Flat; SLEEVES = 25 Inches from Top Shoulder Seam to Cuff; BACK = 19 Inches From Shoulder Seam to Shoulder Seam Across the Upper Back, Just Below the Collar. This style of tunic is manufactured of very thick wool and is heavily padded, especially at the shoulders. It is truly an excellent condition, beautiful piece that makes for a striking display.2. US Army Model 1902 Artillery Enlistedman\'s Visor Hat - GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION - This M1902 visor cap/hat shows moderate signs of age, wear and use. The museum made two repairs to mothing to the top portion of the wool upper, these are located to the viewer\'s right and rear and are visible in the photos. The repairs were professionally stitched and do not detract from the hat when displayed. The museum also stitched a cloth accession tag to a portion of the interior wool located behind the leather sweatband. In addition to the repaired mothing to the wool upper, there is one moth nip that is slightly larger than a pencil lead near the artillery crossed cannons to the front. The hat maintains excellent color with NO Soiling, Staining or Fading to the exterior. The chinstrap shows some wear and age and the visor shows some blistering to the exterior layer, this is visible in the photos. The Red portions of the hat remain bright with no fading. The leather frame of the hat is in good condition, but does show wear to the rear. However, it is not warped or misshapen. The interior shows moderate wear throughout with light soiling and fading as well as some loose stitching to the liner. As with most enlisted visors of the day, it has no maker\'s stamps or markings. The leather sweatband remains in place, but has loose stitching and must be handled carefully to keep from damaging the stitching any further. Even with the defects, it is a very solid hat that displays extremely well. It is approximately a Size 6 7/8.3. US Model 1907 Enlistedman\'s Khaki Cotton Tunic - VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT CONDITION - Philippine Insurrection Era Tunic with \"Stand and Fall\" Collar, Bellows Pockets, Pointed Cuffs and Rimless buttons. The style and design worn prior to August 1911 and the type described in the article \"Uncle Sam\'s Khaki Soldiers\" which can be seen online. This tunic only shows very minor signs of age, wear and use with NO Mothing and NO Damage of any sort. There is no obvious fading that detracts from its appearance and it maintains very good color. There is light scattered soiling to the front and considerable staining / soiling to the left sleeve. There is light soiling / staining to the right sleeve as well. The rear and interior of the tunic remain in excellent condition with only minor signs of age and wear. The \"US\" and Model 1902 Artillery Crossed Cannon Collar Insignia are In Excellent Condition. It appears that the photos could be easily removed if you so choose. 7. Three Period Photos of Soldiers Marching and Encamped - GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION - Originals, Not Reproductions. The First Photo is a Large 7 x 5 Inch image of soldiers marching in camp behind officer\'s mounted on horseback. Clear image with good detail. The Second Photo is marked \"Fourth of July in Paris\" to the lower left corner. This photo is in Excellent Condition and shows a number of soldiers parading through the streets of Paris, France. Maintains excellent detail and a bright image. The Third Photo shows soldiers encamped and perhaps digging trenches or setting up defensive positions. The image remains clear with good detail but there is wear to the edges and small amount of material loss to the upper and lower right corners. The second item is a 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 Inch Silk souvenir of the armistice. It lists France, US and England as well as the date. It shows wear to the edges and light soiling as well. Both are mounted to red museum board.9. Eight Pages of Recent Research Regarding Mahlon Ira Carter and His Military Service - Eight pages of research that give a considerable amount of information on Private Carter\'s military service as well as his place of birth, where he lived, when he was born, when he died and where he is buried. With some studying of these documents and such things as the information on the back of one of the photo post cards, you could easily piece together the details concerning much of Private Carters service leading up to his sailing for France in 1918. He obviously served at least three years prior to June 1917, most of which it appears was at Fort Monroe, Virginia. However, more research is needed to fully understand all of his Pre WWI service. You can also see the notation of \"overseas\" awkwardly written on his veteran\'s benefits card. This information documents everything stated here and the collection very well. It also provides more than enough information to conduct further research on his obviously quite lengthy service in the US Army. I find it also very interesting to see much of the information is written in Private Carter\'s own hand.It goes without saying that this is truly a Museum Quality Collection. A documented grouping such as this is almost never seen on the open collectors market. Documented, early groupings of this type are normally only seen in the holdings of museums, as this one once was. It is a rare find to say the least. Now, for the first time this grouping is available to the general public and you can have this former museum collection in your own personal collection. It is a must for uniform collectors and could easily be the centerpiece of the hard to find, early 20th Century Section of your Collection. This collection could be proudly displayed in any military museum or institution anywhere in the world and is truly for the most advanced collectors. It is that rare and of that level of quality and condition. It is brilliant, eye catching and very impressive to behold. You will be very impressed when you see it and be extremely proud to own it!
