JOANIES CHINESE SCHOLAR ART ESTATE sale

JOANIES VOTED #1 ESTATE sales TEN YEARS AND RUNNING!

Hello, thank you for having a look at our sales. This week we are very excited to be offering the what I believe to be one of our most important sale sales to date, and our Last large sale of the season. This sale offers a wide variety of fine and important Chinese works of art including bronzes, jades, paintings and other rarely found scholarly objects.

The sale features items from two important estate collections, along with some last porcelain examples from the Michael Vermeer collection. We have featured items from both these estate collections in the past and now the estate has asked us to sell the remainder of the collections. They include items from the estate of Mr. H.H Pao of Toronto who owned a high-end shop in the famous Four Seasons hotel in Toronto for several years throughout the 1980s to 1990s period. Mr. Pao was a dear friend whom was considered one of North America’s top experts and scholars in many categories of antique Chinese art. The sale also includes jades and other early Chinese bronze and archaic items from the estate of A Abraham. Mr. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector in the 1950-70’s period. He frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips at the time. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop in the famous King Edward hotel in Toronto until his retirement in the year 1976, 40 years ago. When the shop closed many of the pieces went to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept some of his most favorite examples that we are now offering for sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now.

Up for sale is an very rare and important Chinese Ming dynasty jade buffalo form rhyton cup. This rhyton cup is an astonishing example that I am told is an extremely rare and sought after find. The rhyton cup has a great earlier Ming dynasty design and is finely carved throughout. The array of colors to the jade are amazing and you can feel the early age throughout the carving. The rhyton cup is also very finely and deeply carved throughout the interior right down into the buffalo’s head. The rhyton cup came from the estate with this carved hardwood stand that was likely made in the earlier 20th century for the cup. I personally prefer it displayed with the buffalo’s head facing upwards or to its side.

The cup is a substantial size measuring 8 inches long, by 6 3/8 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. The cup could use a light cleaning and shows signs of its early age throughout. The cup is overall in very fine original condition with no damage, or repairs. I have also closely inspected this cup under UV black light that reveals absolutely no condition issues or restoration work of any kind.

Provenance: The provenance notes that came from the estate with the cup indicate the rhyton cup was purchased from the well-known Alan & Joan Hartman collection several decades ago. The notes also indicate this rhyton cup was exhibited between Oct 25, 1967 to January 28th, 1968 at the Chinese Institute of America. From what I have read this special exhibition featured animals and birds incorporated into early China art. I believe there is a good chance further information or pictures of this cup could be found during this exhibition. There is also a good chance this cup has been published elsewhere. I am not exactly sure what this rhyton cups value would be. I do believe it would be quite substantial, possibly even into six-figures from what I am told. As my sales have run for upwards of 12 years saleing online this important and extremely rare jade rhyton cup will be sold to the highest offerding with Absolutely . I believe this is likely one of the rarest and most value jade pieces that has been ever offered on , and I highly doubt you will see another one like this being offered any time soon! A truly astonishing museum quality example.

PLEASE REVIEW PAYMENT AND RETURN POLICIES PRIOR TO offerDING. BEST OF LUCK WITH THE sales! Mark your calendars this sale ends theEvening of MondayFeb 27th.
