Civil War/Indian Wars overcoat.I was told this is a late Civil War and early Indian War enlistedovercoat. It is a Civil War pattern(standing hook/eye collar, attached cape with 6 buttons, 5 buttons on the coat)but in Indian War color (darker blue rather than sky blue). This coat has “been there,” showing age, wear and adamaged cape. The cape is the typepermanently attached (sewn) to the bottom of the standing collar. For some odd reason the left side (button-holeside) of the cape is gone…look at the photos and you can see a neat cut on theback. The remaining right or button sidehas several long sewn repairs both horizontal and vertical (see photo). As youcan see, there are 4 of the 6 cape buttons remaining and none of the coatbuttons remain. There is a period stafftype button on the rear belt, but that is incorrect.

The coat part itself is in pretty good shape with both hooks and eyes still there on the collar, the material is strong, andonly minimum mothing…I see only a few noticeable holes, two up on the right rear shoulder under the cape, the other which looks more like wear by the lowerfront button (all about ¼ inch). Theremight be 4 other small bites on the rest of the coat. The cape has half a dozen small bites. This coat is by no means eaten up nor is itweak and falling apart. A few seams are coming loose however, but can be resewn. The button holes arehand sewn and some of the other sewing looks hand done but I’m not sure. The color is still good, fairly dark bluewith some light fading to the cape.

For a 150 year old overcoat Ithink it makes a good presentation as a piece of history…adding the correct buttons wouldmake it that much better. Could bedisplayed with half the cape down and the missing half appearing to be flipped back over the shoulder (see photo)....just a thought.A nice piece of history at a reasonable starting price. Shipping weight is 4.10 lbs.

I had a question about sleeve lining and markings. Yes, the sleeves are lined and Yes, there is a 3 line lettered marking in the upper left sleeve that I missed in my description. I have added a photo of it. It is faint, I can make out letters but not what it says, maybe some of you can. I would assume it is a quartermaster/arsenal stamp.
