Large .999 Fine Silver Libertas Americana Medal, 1776 (1976 Striking) Nice!

United States Medals. Libertas Americana Silver Medal, 1776 – the U.S. Bicentennial 1976 Restrike in .999 Fine Silver. Fine Silver .999; 234.8 grams (7.55 ounces), 77mm and 5.5mm thick, Restruck by the Paris, France Mint, edge lettered: Copy of Design By Benjamin Franklin: Originals Struck in 1783 S.I.C.M.M. Paris France – GO (star) No. 0376 (star) ARGENT (hallmark). The obverse features the image of Liberty with flowing hair and Liberty Cap on Pole facing left with the legend LIBERTAS AMERICANA above and 4 JUIL. 1976 in exergue; the reverse features Britannia with shield and spear holding back a lion (France) protecting an infant (United States); inscription NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS above and 4 JUIL. 1776. In exergue.

Nice Extremely Fine to AU with toning and patina. I suspect that most of these were probably melted in the 1979-1980 bullion rush and that few of the original mintage exist – you just don’t see many of the 1976 restrike medal but the more recent (c. 21st Century) “original size” restrikes are readily available. An impressive display piece with display stand.
