This is an old basket from the Salish of western Washington. It is made from coiled conifer root and decorated with bear grass and cherry bark. The basket is 12\" tall and 11\" across the rim at the widest part. It has string and deer hide lashings that were used to hold the basket to the body so as to keep the hands free for picking berrys. Under the dust inside one can still see purple stains from the huckleberrys, etc. Decoration is minimal which is typical for these work baskets. Good used condition with just the ethnic wear, no breaks or major damage. Email questions.
