DESCRIPTION: LEE WAY MOTOR FREIGHT Tractor #172 is a ca. 1953 WHITE WC-24PLT Pusher Axle Road Tractor, powered with the new White Super Power 6-Cylinder Mustang gasoline engine rated at 184 hp. The license plate hanging from the front bumper appears to be a Kansas City 1953 plate. This WC-24PLT has a pusher axle with a single tire on the front tandem, known as a 6 x 2 ... A weight reducing idea popular at that time. This photo has a narrow white border on all 4 sides.

The White WC-24PLT was advertised at the New Lightweight ‘Payload Tractor’. It had high horsepower for its day, was light weight, offered superior performance, and more payload. Known by its new flat front end, the WC-24PLT was said to weigh just 10,320 lbs. in the 4x2 version, including 100 gallons of gas, a fifth wheel, 10.00 x 20 tires, air brakes, a 7500 lb. front axle and 20,00 lb. rear axle. Transmission was a 5-speed, direct in 5th, with a 2-speed rear end. All in all, a very modern road tractor for the mid-1950s.

HISTORY OF LEE WAY MOTOR FREIGHT, INC., Oklahoma City, OK: As often was the case with older transportation companies, R. W. Lee bought a team of horses and a buggy in 1914, and by 1934 established his first trucking route from Oklahoma City to Shamrock, TX with the purchase of Amarillo Transfer and Storage. As the years passed, Lee Way purchased additional trucking companies through the 1960s. By 1970, Lee Way operated 73 terminals, operating almost 22,000 route miles using reefers, doubles, open tops and convertible vans. After 40 years of continuous operation, this trucking giant was sold to Pepsico in 1976. While operating Lee Way, Pepsico lost millions of dollars, selling the carrier to the much smaller Commercial-Lovelace of Columbus, OH. By 1985 the entire system was shut down, idling thousands of employees ... another once proud carrier done in by deregulation.
