N C WYETH Photographs Signed Thoreau Essay + Anton Kamp, Letters Ephemera ++
…… I am sure many of you are already familiar with the important, artistic father & son, N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) and Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) of Pennsylvania. Two of the best-known American painter and illustrators of the 20th century, the Wyeth’s style were both realistic and abstract, and their work can be found in numerous books and publications. ... We were recently consigned a very important, and fresh-to-the-market, lot of Ephemera relating to both them. This collection came from the estate of Jim Simpson, a very close friend of the family. Within this lot are hand written and signed letters, a hand drawn Christmas card and two printed cards that are hand signed by Andrew Wyeth. These items have been separated into three separate sales. The fourth sale consists of Thoreau essays, original photographs and hand signed correspondence, from NC Wyeth and a fellow artist, photographer and friend, Anton Kamp. ... All four of these Wyeth Ephemera sales will be listed tonight and without any reserve. ……All of the Ephemera in this sale is in regards to NC Wyeth and fellow artist, photographer and friend Anton Kamp (1898 - 1984/85). Everything is all from the estate of Jim Simpson, who was friends with both artists. ... If you are familiar with NC Wyeth’s History, then you know he was highly influenced by Henry David Thoreau. In a book titled Henry David Thoreau as a Source for Artistic Inspiration (by DeCordova and Dana) there is an excerpt that reads, “Author of an article, ‘Thoreau, His Critics, and the Public,’ 1919, defending the reputation of Thoreau and drawing attention to hisJournal. N.C. Wyeth considered Thoreau his guide to the simple, honest life; for him Thoreau was a prophet.” … Within the lot of Ephemera in this sale is an original, hand typed copy of Thoreau, His Critics, and the Public which is signed on the last page, in pencil, “NC Wyeth.” Although this article was not published until 2000 (Volume 8 Issue of The Concord Saunterer), Anton Kamp read it aloud at the Thoreau Society on July 7, 1951, in remembrance of his dear friend NC. The signed essay in this sale is the copy that Kamp read aloud that day. Along with this essay comes two copies of the speech that Kamp read along with Wyeth’s Essay, both of which are hand signed by Anton Kamp on the last page.
……Also included in this sale are two hand written and signed letters, from Anton Kamp, to Mr. and Mrs. Simpson. The first letter is dated August 31, 1951, only a month or so after Kamp delivered his speech to the Thoreau Society. This letter thanks a Mr. Volkman for telling the Simpson’s about his speech, and states that with the letter he enclosed a book that was given to him, by NC, in 1923 and is an original draft. …… The second letter is 5 pages long and was written in 1964. I have not fully read this letter but it seems to be thanking the Simpsons their friendship and help, and for being generally good and thoughtful people. He also refers to an article that he wrote, about NC Wyeth in the 1926 copy of The Artgum, a small publication from his Art School. You will also find that a copy of this edition of The Artgum, is included in this sale, and has been hand-inscribed and signed on the inside cover by Kamp and addressed to him and Elma Simpson! Unfortunately, the front and back covers of this book are separated, but they have not been lost. ……The last two letters in this sale were type-written in 1946, from James. P. Simpson, and are addressed to “Mr. Wyeth” (Andrew) They thank Andy for sending hard-to-find copies American Artist which feature NC Wyeth’s work and nearly complete his collection. He also states that he enjoyed having Andy and his wife visit to examine the collection of NC Wyeth art that they have and that they cannot wait to visit NC’s studio soon.
…… Also included in this sale are three type-written speeches by Elma Simpson all which are about NC Wyeth and his influence on her. There are also various newspaper clippings about Simpson’s speeches on the artist.
…… Finally, the last items in this sale are 11 original black & white photographs, by Anton Kamp. They depict original paintings by himself, as well as paintings by NC Wyeth. There is also a hand signed portrait of Kamp, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, and there are a few candid shots of Anton Kamp and Andrew Wyeth and his wife! These photographs are all inscribed and described on the back by Anton.
