Lewis and His Fairy Bed

Spring has finally come to Pennsylvania. The mother bears have left their dens with their young. In most places the mother bear leaves her baby at the foot of a tree while she goes off foraging for meals. The young bears learn to climb very early in their life to keep safe from danger. But deep in the magical woods near my house, the mothers leave their cubs in the trusted hands of the fae folk. Fairy beds are built of old stumps, they are lined with soft moss and sprinkled with fairy dust. The fairies stand silent guard, protecting the babes from the danger that lurks deep in the woods.

Lewis is made from design to completion by me, Joanne Livingston of Desertmountainbear. He is a North American black bear, and I have given him the light face, the light paws, and the pinkish nose of a young cub. He is named after Lewisburg, a town near where I now live in Pennsylvania.

Lewis\'s details:

Lewis is about standing 9\" (23cm) tall from his feet to the tips of his ears, and about 7\" (18cm) sitting. He will stand alone with some balancing.

Made of mohair that I dyed myself, and has been lighted shaded with inks and acrylics.

Black glass teddy bear eyes. Eyelids will go to a sleepy position.

Leather paw pads with hand sculpted epoxy clay claws.

Four way jointed. There is no neck joint, instead there is flexible plastic armature that runs from his head down to his lower back like a spine. His head cannot turn from side to side like a traditional joint allows. It will, however, go up and down, turn, and tilt. This allows for lots of posing positions. His arms and legs are too small for lockline, so they have been wired for gentle posing.

Filled with polyester, wool, and soft pellets. She is softly stuffed for ease of movement.

His face has been needle felted of wool. There is no pattern used for the face, this makes each bear unique. The wool I use I buy raw, I wash it, and prepare it myself. I use a special needle that has barbs to mat the wool and turn it into felt. After the face is sculpted with the wool, I use the same needle to root individual hairs into the felt. The hairs are locked in and do not come out. This is a very time consuming technique. It creates a very natural realistic look.

His nose has also been felted with a needle and wool. It has been sealed and sanded many times, then finally given several coats of paint to add depth and realism.

Lewis sleeps safely in a little tree stump bed. I have made the bed of paper mache. It has been well sealed. Real vines and wire make up the canopy, and ribbon and paper flowers adorn it. Real preserved moss was added to the outside, and the moss mattress where he sleeps is made of silk.

Lewis will be sent with a picture hang tag, and certificate of authenticity. Like all of the bears I make, his left foot is signed.

At least 60 hours of work goes into each and every bear I create. I am a self-taught bear maker and most of the techniques I use I have created myself. I like to think that gives the bears I create a look that is uniquely mine.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have.

Lewis comes from a smoke free home.
