Original Antique Hawthorne Balloon Tire Tank Bicycle Pre / Post War Schwinn Mead
Price: US $704.00
After owning, riding and enjoying this bike for some time I need to let it go due to relocating. This is a rare Hawthorne bike in that it is a fully equipped, completely original, everythingis solid, works, and works well, has tight bearings, and the bike is not worn out or ridden to death.
Features:The bike hasa skip-toothed chain. A softball headlight that works perfectly - lamp has a threaded low watt LED which i used for cruising around those late summer and fall nights so the batteries last pretty much forever. The horn works great and has a nice mellow sound. The bike comes with a fully functioning springer fork but I did install a piece of black rubber hose inside the springto take the spring out of the fork as i prefer the glide of a solid ride. If the buyer does not like this just take off the top nut on the spring and remove the hose and it will be back to original. This bike comes with an original kickstand, leather under-saddle tool set, lucky 7 seat post, chrome and glass mirror, and additional handlebar bell as well as 2 leather rear saddle bags . Tires are older Typhoons but look great on the bike and are good for riding and hold air very well.
Condition:The bike paintis in amazing shape as can be seen in the pictures of the frame, fenders, etcThe handle bars on the bike are in much better shape than anything else and I suspectthey have been replaced or re-chromed a fair while back - this is the only part of the bike with an unknown history. Some surface rust is visible on the rims and in minor amounts in other places but is limited and adds to the overall appearance of the bike, the rims are also true and free of bumps. Also, this bike has a really nice feel to it in that it is slightly larger, longer and more solid than some bikes and is great for someone who is a full 6ft tall like myself. It seems a lot of bikes are undersized and do not work well for fully grown adults! I really don\'t want to let this bike go as I know it seems to be getting harder to find bikes that are un-restored, in such good and complete un-touched conditionand yet are also still fully and safely rideable, however, I am just going to close my eyes and think about it later. This is a bike that gets lots of attention when ridden and is ready to go without the usual tinkering or adjusting, or hunting down parts that often comes with buying an antique bike.
Age: As far as the age, i am pretty sure this bike is post war and approx a 1947 model but I am not exactlysure, years ago I was told thisby a bike enthusiast.
Shipping: This bike is being shipped almost fully assembled- i am doing this because there is nothing worse than getting a new bike and having to re-build it, so i decided that i would ship it almost \"ready-to-ride\". The wheelsof the bike are on, the fenders are on, and the forks are on. The only assemblyrequired is installing the pedals, seat, and handle bars. The tool bag is still on the seat, the mirror and bell are still on the handle bars but will need adjustment, the tires will need inflating. The shipping is set at $150.00 as a standard, I may have to charge more (or less) if there is a special request or arrangement around shipping or a unique circumstance. The $150 is set to cover the continental USA and contiguousstates but we can work anything out that presents itself.
Packing: This bike is being shipped in a plywood crate that is 7 inches wide 72 inches long and 32 inches tall. The bike and box together weight 72 lbs. The bike is anchored within the crate. I have packed the bike this way to avoid shipping damage. A cardboard box is no way to ship a nice bike that has survivedso many years only to be damaged in shipping. The crate was fairly expensive to build but has a removable lid and is fully reusable so there is the added benefit of using this to ship future bikes. The bike is being shipped from Washington state but a local pick up would be free and could save a buyer some money. I can also get this bike into Canada if a buyer needs it on that side of the border, or i can even store it for later pick up. The old leather saddle bags pictured on the bike are being packed and shipped separately.
I hope this bike goes to a good home and is appreciated and cared for so that riders in future years get to enjoy it much in the same was as those who have gotten to ride in the past. With that in mind I have priced it with an especially low starting price comparedto the other stuff people are currently trying to sell on , also I have price and keep in mind the bike has at least $200 of accessories in the saddle bags, tool bag, bell and mirrorand not to mention the low shipping costs which are less than the actual shipping costs :)

Following the sale of this bike, I have now decided to sell my early 40s Schwinn tank bike, this is a fully decked out model: working horn, head light, front bake. This is a bike that is in mint, restored condition, has been completelyand professionally rebuilt, high-end restoration original to manufacture, paint is (burgundy and cream), whitewall tires, has many NOS and re-chromed parts, new bearings/races, tight & solid, all parts stamped AS (Arnold / Schwinn). Bike can be ridden or even preferably displayed in a home or commercial setting as it is seductive and stunning to look at. I am adding this note here as an item to watch for within the next couple weeks, thanks for reading!
