All repairs have been done to an exceptionally high standard and the violin is ready for immediate performance. The varnish remains entirely original and the violin has been expertly set up by an experienced luthier who is also a professional concert soloist. The scroll is grafted and the peg box bushed. There may be other repairs, so well-done as to be invisible. This is a master made violin, from one of the best makers in Germany. The Kloz name is certainly on any connoisseur\'s list of major and important violin makers of the 18th century. We all hear about the famous Cremonese masters, but in his day, a violin made by George Kloz was as valuable, if not more so, than a violin made by Stradivari or Guarneri. In fact, as late as the early 20th century, major retail houses cataloged Kloz violins for the same prices as very fine Italian violins. Below is a scan from a page of the Rudolph Wurlitzer catalog of \"Fine Violins\" published in 1925. It lists a George Kloz of the same year as this violin for the same price as a Ventapane, a Valanzano or a Pertrus Guarnerius.William Henley, in his Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
provides the following review of George Kloz II
This is an important and fine antique violin representing some of the best violin making of the 18th century. The tone is old world, sweet, rich, clean and pure. It hearkens to a time that predates huge concert halls when music was enjoyed in an intimate setting often with only a handful of instruments. The pretty quality of the tone, the sonority and resonance meant more to the player and audience than power and huge volume. Often, the finest old violins deliver exactly that charming quality of old world tone. No, this violin is not well-suited to a soloist leading an orchestra on stage in an enormous hall. But rarely will you find a better quality sound, more sweetness and elegance than this violin offers. It is a wonderfully mellow, responsive, expressive and flexible sound that is refined and sophisticated for the accomplished professional looking for a great chamber violin. The back measures 357mm or 14 1/16 inches.
