Price: US $478.00
EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE, ORIGINAL 1577 EDITION OF \"ARITHMETICA\". This important 16th century work was written by Jiřík Goerl z Goerlšteyna [aka Girjka Gorla z Gorlssteyna, George Goerlich of Goerlštejna, et al.] (d.1591) and printed by Jiří Černý z Černého Mostu, Prague, Czechoslovakia. Informative text contains five parts in one volume, \"the first dealing chiefly with the fundamental operations with counters, the second with written operations, the third with fractions, the fourth with business arithmetic, and the fifth with the rule of false and allied topics\" (see Smith, Rara Arithmetica). The present work is \"Very rare...the book is seldom mentioned by bibliographers\" (see Smith). Alhough various digital sources correctly identify this early math treatise as Czech in both language and origin, a number of reference sources including Smith erroneously identify the language as Polish. German-born author was a graduate of the Latin school who learned Czech and taught math at Prague, where he also became a notary public. At the end of 1576 he published, at Prague, \"Ein Nutzlich vnd to ünstlich...Rechenbuch\", a reckoner (i.e., arithmetic) book devoted to the Emperor Rudolf II. Text described how to count linách and with Arabic numerals, along with the basics of algebra and problems related to mercantile practice. In 1577 Goerl issued the present work, in Czech, which was far more comprehensive and thorough and geared toward a youthful audience. This was followed by a second editionin 1597 and third edition in 1610. All are rare today, though the first edition especially so with no other known copies located.
