Has add-on (Ford) Power Steering (see videos and pictures).
Needs seat. Front nose is dinged up (see pictures).
Good average tires.
On back are some grader blades put together for a good rear counter weight (seepictures.) The mechanic shown driving it in thevideo has maintained it and operated it a lot over the years for thefarm. These are the main questions we asked him:
1. Does it seem to go in all gears ok? -Yes
2. If oil pressure gaugeworks what does it read? -\"M\" or Medium right where it should be with a Two-Cylinder tractor.
3. What % of new are therear tires? 40% or better. Has a few normal weather cracks seepictures.

4. How is transmission?Good with no issues.
5.How is clutch? -Good
6. How is powersteering? -Good
7. How are brakes?Should be adjusted but working

From theJohn Deere Collectors Guide-\"For well over two decades,while John Deere engineers developed a full line of row-crop tractors and theirvariations, the \"D\" was carrying the load in rice country andwheatland. By the mid-40s, it was a much-changed tractor from the original“D”—mounted on rubber in the early 30s; styled in 1939; drawbar horsepowerincreased to 24.02 in 1935, 30.46 in 1940. But wheatland farmers were growinglarger, too, and demanding a standard tractor with even more power than thelater models of the \"D\".
Coincidentally, a new fuel was becomingincreasingly popular for industrial uses: Diesel. And diesel engine technologywas reducing the disadvantages which had slowed the adoption of diesel powerfor agricultural tractors. In the early years of World War II John Deereengineers began designing a standard tractor to replace the \"D\". Twoof their goals were: (1) more power, and (2) a diesel engine. By 1949, they hadrealized both objectives in the Model \"R\".
The \"R\" had a gasoline-fueledauxiliary starting engine, which eased two problems that had plagued earlierdiesels. While others were started with the operator standing on the groundmanually turning a flywheel, the \"R\" was started with the operatorseated, pulling a lever. While others were slow to warm up, starting-engineheat enhanced warmup of the \"R\" for a fast start on the day\'s work,even in cold weather. The \"R\" boasted many other features pioneeredon John Deere Tractors, of course. And the \"R\" had power--more powerthan any tractor John Deere had manufactured. It was rated at 34.27 drawbar hpand 43.32 belt hp.\"

Hobbs notes:\"The R was the first John Deerediesel, representing over twelve years of research and experimentation, andthey were the last of the letter series tractors built. In the opinion of thiswriter, you haven\'t really lived until you have heard or seen an R in full cry,either a stocker pulling the heavy tillage implements it was designed for, or amodified R pulling a sled, using all of its power and traction. The heavenlyhost itself could make music no finer.\"
