This is a very rare museum quality piece of original potteryfrom the University of North Dakota School of Mines, and is a wonderful exampleof early American Art Pottery. This fabulous vase features a very hard to findand highly sought after Native American Indian design with a carved Sioux Indianshooting a bow and arrow, and riding a horse. The design appears three timesaround the vase. The detail on this piece is outstanding. This vase has a mattebrown glaze with several rings of different shades of brown around the vase.This vase was designed and signed by Flora Gable Huckfield (HUCK); who was thesister of Margaret Cable. Miss Huckfiled joined the ceramics department at theUND School of Mines in 1924 and became a critically acclaimed and honoredartist. This vase hasthe engraved signature/cipher “HUCK” for Flora Huckfield; the engraved name of the vase “SIOUX” forthe design; the engraved number “151” which corresponds to a date of 1943; andhas the cobalt blue University of North Dakota Pottery seal on the bottom.
