A Rare Large Antique Historical Staffordshire Dark Blue Transferware Water Pitcher circa 1825

~ Ferret or Goat Pattern ~ Sporting Series ~ Enoch Wood & Sons ~

Just over 10 1/4" high to top of handle ~ About 10" from spout to handle

Enoch Wood & Sons Sporting Series or Zoological series uses a different animal in each piece of an extensive dinner service, all showing either hunted animals or animals being hunted. I believe this is the water pitcher or ewer that would have fit inside a wash basin or bowl. The wash bowl of this pattern shows a beaver and his dam, but not unusual that the transfers would not have matched.
Please see the Transferware Collectors Club and Northern Ceramic Society wonderful site which gives this pattern a full page and illustrates almost all the views. (copy and paste link below)

The section of the scene (shown above) is a young man with a hat and sash that has rats printed or embroidered on it. He is petting or feeding a donkey with another coming toward him. Behind him is a large ferret with his prey. This is a large wraparound transfer with several goats on the other side of the jug and even a church steeple in the distance. This jug has the lovely Sporting Series border of flowers and scrolls printed around the foot and inside and outside the spout, the handle and thumb rest have a lovely string of printed flowers.

This has a large chip to the spout (about 1" x 1/2") which I've colored in with watercolor and guache to make less obtrusive, see the close up pic; this will wash off with soap and water and is not a professional or permanent repair. The chip could easily be filled and repainted by a good restorer to be invisible.
There is one tiny extra bit of pottery at the shoulder (pictured in closeup) that is original. The rest of the jug shows beautifully, the pottery is very clean with good color and glossy pearlware glaze. There is very fine glaze crazing throughout but only visible on very close inspection.

Despite the chip to the spout, this is a lovely and rare piece.
