Rare WW1 WWI German \"Death Belt\" with over 40 Allies Soldier Buttons France, USA
I am not a WW1 collector or expert, so my description of this item may be off. I believe this item to be what is called as a German soldier\'s Death Belt, a belt that he decorated with the buttons and pins of enemy soldiers. There are more than 40 buttons/pins on this leather belt, each sewn on by hand. From what little research I did online, it appears that the buttons are those of Allie soldiers from the US, Great Britain, France, etc... There is also a name plate on the belt from the owner - identified as Georg Leinaue with a location of Peiting Schongau, which I have learned is in Bavaria, near the Alps. There is a metal \"4\" sewn onto the belt, so possibly he was stationed in the 4th Army unit which I believe was in that Schongau area.
Again, I\'m no expert, so I\'d be happy to hear from any astute ers out there that might be able to shed a little more light on this item! One thing for certain, it\'s a one-of-a-kind piece of history that probably belongs in a museum.
