Price: US $9.99

This photo is an excellent high quality new 8” x 10” black & white photo reproduction of a RINGSBY TRUCK LINES’ Early/Mid-1950s PETERBILT DIESEL MODEL 350 COE with SLEEPER CAB pulling an INLAND FREIGHT LINES’ ALUMINUM SEMITRAILER, parked in front of an Inland Freight Lines office/terminal, who Ringsby had acquired in 1950.

“SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.

DESCRIPTION: The Model 350 was introduced in 1949 in both conventional and COE models. In 1950, 41 of the round-nose COE’s were built, with a total of 300 Model 350 COE’s being built into 1957. The 350 COE was basically replaced with the Model 351 COE in 1955, but both styles were built for several years. The 350 COE in this photo has the oval Peterbilt logo, while the first ones built still used the old square Peterbilt logo. The 350 COE had a tilt cab, opening to a forward 90º angle, secured by 2 steel cables from the frame to the rear of the cab. The front sheet metal below the curved hood, had a full-length piano hinge that allowed the front sheet metal to raise up, and the fenders were hinged at the rear to easily swing open, permitting access to both sides of the engine for complete servicing. The 87-1/2” wide cab was mounted 16” higher than the conventional, and had a small removable ‘dog house’ protruding back into the cab. The BBC on the sleeper version was 96-1/2”. By 1954, Peterbilt eliminated the skirted fenders on the conventionals, that had been around since 1939. This photo has a white border around all 4-sides.

HISTORY OF RINGSBY TRUCK LINES, INC.: Headquartered in Denver, CO, Ringsby was established in 1932 by J. W. Ringsby with the purchase of a new REO Speedwagon, beginning regular service between Denver and Chicago. Ringsby grew steadily through acquisition, and by the 1960s had 43 terminals in 26 states with over 3,000 units on the road. They ran sharp looking Kenworths, Peterbilts and GMCs, pulling reefers, open tops and tankers. One of Ringby’s 1950 acquisitions was INLAND FREIGHT LINES. In 1969 Ringsby purchased both United-Buckingham Freight Lines and Norwalk Truck Lines. With both of the new acquisitions losing money, Ringsby too lost money after 28 years of profitable operation. Losses from 1969 to 1975 hit $25 million. Ringsby looked to the unions for help in wage reductions, but none were coming. With no agreement, the company was struck in August 1976, lasting 3 years and costing Ringsby millions of dollars. It is believed to be the longest strike against a major carrier in the history of the trucking industry. In 1981, Ringsby returned to a break-even point, but never returned to its former profitability. In 1984 the Ringsby fleet was shut down for good ... another once proud motor carrier gone from the highways.
