ROYAL DOULTON QUEENSWAREQUEEN ELIZABETH 1 CORONATION JUG(1936)
SUPER RARE. EXCELLENT CONDITION QUEENSWAREJUG, 1936. This piece is by Maud Bowden and is counted among the most rare of Queensware pieces. Uncharacteristically, it is not designed by Harry Noke. The relief on this pitcher is more pronounced than on other Kingsware and Queensware, almost as if foreshadowing the higher relief jugs and loving cups that would be produced as collectibles in limited editions throughout the 1930s. Indeed, Jocelyn Lukins characterizes these as \"Embossed Subjects\" but still in the Kingsware category.Maud Bowden was one of the many long-service Doulton senior assistants, starting in 1903 and working through the art nouveau period, until 1937. Many of Doulton\'s artists were women, and in 1881/2 they presented an illuminated manuscript to Henry Doulton \'to take this opportunity of expressing our obligations to you for the origination of an occupation at once interesting and elevating to so large a number of our sex\'.
THE KINGSWARE EXAMPLE
With a brown, orange and cream ground, it has a ringed base and neck, with fleurs de lys bands around waist and inside rim and a raised Lion herald on the back. The sculpted picture of her majesty Queen Elizabeth I, done in greens, red, yellow, cream and blue, just beautiful. The Doulton mark is accompanied by the monogram mb for Maud Bowden. The ground on this example is somewhat different than on most Kingsware products, and is called, \"Aerographed Brown\". The colors lack the soft effects of most Kingsware products and are, according to Jocelyn Lukins, \"much sharper and more vibrant with definite reds, greens and browns . . . . These wares are given further distinguishing feature[s] by having handles, necks and bases Aerographed with a spray painting technique.\" The lighter brown is called \"John Barleycorn Brown\". This airbrush technique is the same as used in the early character jugs.
The figurine measures 6 1/2 tall x 6 1/2 from handle to spout. In excellent condition, no damage whatsoever, very easy to look at! (I don\'t see any crazing, but there must be some on it somewhere). The impressed factory number indicates that this is an example of Doulton’s ‘series ware’, executed by assistants to a senior artist’s design in an edition of a few dozen.THE QUEENSWARE EXAMPLE
The Queensware piece is the more valuable of the two and considerably more rare. I have not been able to determine the size of the run, but it is smaller than the Kingsware run.
The size, shape and pattern are identical (or at least nearly so). The field is all in an ivory ground. Unlike the Kingsware edition, the fleurs de lys bands around waist and inside rim and the raised Lion herald on the back are in a contrasting light brown. . The sculpted picture of her majesty Queen Elizabeth I, done in more in blues with a little deep red and some white.
There is crazing throughout, but it just lends more interest to what otherwise might be too plane a background. The Queen herself is more impressionistic, perhaps done by a different artist as there is no mb on the bottom, but I can find no reference for my speculation.
Queensware was made by the same process as Kingswarebut with an ivory slip body. The muted color scheme wasnot as popular making Queensware designs harder to findtoday. At first glance, it is sometimes difficult for collectorsto distinguish Queensware from the typical under-glazeairbrushed decoration employed by Doulton for similarsubjects in the 1930s. This is often described as ‘Air BrushBrown’ and is generally crisper in color and definition. style=\"text-decoration:none\"
