Scarce C.1935 HEDDON "Marshall Field Special" 8', 3/2 Split Bamboo Fly Trade Rod
Price: US $493.88

It's my pleasure to offer at sale an Extremely Nice, Scarce and Quite Desirable CIRCA 1935-1937 HEDDON "MARSHALL FIELD SPECIAL" 8 FT., 3/2 SPLIT BAMBOO "EXTRA LIGHT TROUT ACTION" TRADE FLY ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL LABELED BAG & HEDDON ALUMINUM TUBE. One of the nicer Trade rods I've seen from James Heddon's Sons and builtin the very desirable 8 ft. lengthin what Heddon called "Extra Light Trout"action on a No.1-1/2 (16/64th) ferrule. These were produced as trade rods for Marshall Field & Company of Chicago, one of the city's most famous department stores, sometime in the mid to late 1930's. The "Marshall Field Special" model is listed in the April 6, 1937 "HEDDON PRIVATE BRAND RODS" list seen on page 176 of Michael Sinclair's awesome reference "HEDDON - The Rod With The Fighting Heart", so we know it wasbeing producedas late as 1937. Heddon's Cleo Hanley has handwritten "Marshall Field Special" in white ink, just above the hook keeper. The reel seat locking nut is stamped "PAT.NO. 1624052", the 1927 patent assigned to Heddon for the screw-locking seat. Built with high-grade browntone Tonkin cane, gun metal hardwareand comes equipped extra tip section, agate stripping guide, (10) snake guides (two on the mid, 4 on each tip), Perfection (?) tip tops, hand-welted & serrated ferrules, flip-ring hook keeper, black pyralin winding & grip check, screw-locking "Hold-Tite" reel seat with swirled plastic spacer, solid cork grip and wound in brown silk tipped in red. Heddon catalogs rate this delicate8 ft. model with a 1-1/2 ferrule as a 4 or 5 wt. rod (HEH or F). Weighs in at 4.3 oz. Rod is in about Very Fine condition, showing only thelight to moderate wear associated with normal use. Restored to original in 2011 by Dennis Buranek of California. Bamboo is perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. All four sections are the correct equal length and reasonably straight. Varnish is in superb condition. Rod shaft markings are pristine and original. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip tops, ferrules, hook keeper, winding check and grip check are nice. Reel seat works perfectly, with bold stamping. Solid cork grip remains in great condition. Put up in the original cloth bag, which shows some staining and overall wear, but remains solid and serviceable. Still carries the original cloth label for "Marshall Field & Company (The Store For Men)". All this goes into a period labeled Heddon tube, which is perfect for shipping and storage. A very nice and early trade package from James Heddon's Sons and one that is an extremely tough to find in this "extra light trout" configuration. To be sold with a very modest starting offer and . Buyer to pay $20.00 shipping via U.S. Priority Mail, with full insurance and tracking. Payment must be received within 7 days of sale closure. Thanks for your time and good luck.
