EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE, ORIGINAL 1683 BOUND EDITION OF \"JOURNAL DES SCAVANS\". This important 17th century work was published by Denis de Sallo and printed by Jean Cusson, Paris. Historically significanttext was the earliest academic journal published in Europe as well as the first scientific journal, preceding the Royal Society of London\'s \"Philosophical Transactions\". Early bound editions of this important biweekly journal, inaugurated in 1665 and issued through 1792, are particularly scarce. The present edition contains issues published in 1681 and1682, with much scientific content and embellished with plates and illustrations on subjects as diverse as astronomy, botany, chemistry, and mathematics. Institutional holdingsof this early bound editionare scant [See OCLC].

\"Denis de Sallo (1626-1699), a French lawyer, received a patent in 1644 to publish a weekly journal for the learned. The \'Journal des scavans\', the first periodical devoted to intellectual subjects, published its first issue on January 5, 1665, beating the English \'Philosophical Transactions\' by a few months. The principal business of the journal was to publish reviews of new books in all fields of knowledge, but it also described scientific experiments and new observations. It was from the beginning intended to be a European rather than a parochially French publication; contributions were solicited from Henry Oldenburg in England and correspondents in the Dutch Republic, and the \'Journal\' circulated Europewide\" [See: The Scientific Revolution: An Encyclopedia by William E. Burns (2001), p. 156].

\"Journal publishing represents the heart of the scientific and technical communication...It is generally agreed that formal scholarly communication began with the journal. Before the emergence of the journal, scientists communicated by means of personal contact and correspondence or letters...communication by letter was restricting in that the information could be disclosed to only one person at a time or to a very limited number if copyists were employed. Publication in conventional book form was cumbersome, time consuming, and uneconomic as the author was forced to delay until he had gathered enough matter to justify publication...The \'Journal des Scavans\' is generally considered the first scientific journal...The Royal Society of London\'s \'Philisophical Transactions\', the first English scientific journal, emerged four months later...\" [See: Serials, Librarianship in Transition: Issues and Developments edited by Peter Gellatly (1986), p. 290].
