SHA-ZAM!! HUGE Vintage BEN YAZZIE Navajo 1960-70s Silver Concho Belt $2,595VERY Well Made Belt in Very Good Vintage Condition 650g (2+ lbs)
DESCRIPTION: This is a wonderful hand hammered domed concho belt by the well respected Ben Yazzie.Concho belts were Ben's specialty and this belt certainly shows his dedication to doing it right.....
This belt consist of nine 2 1/2" x 3" hand-hammered domed sterling conchoswith a integralscalloped bordersand hammer marked domes..... Most domed belts of this vintage are heavily dented by this point in their life, but Ben made this belt the correct way and backed each concho with heavy leather backs.... Many timesthe copper on belts of this age has oxidized to the point of becoming green and corroding the leather, thisbelts copper concho strapsare just starting to show a little green patina on the connections to the conchos...The leather appears to be originaland is in wonderful shape w/ hand stitch details.....
The conchosare in very goodcondition.... I'm not sure how Ben he crafted the dimple effectof the conchodomes, whether he dimpled the flat silver stock then pressed/hammered the dome shape or the other way around...I mention this because the domes have an almost faceted appearance to it.... every 4-5 dimples kind of makea facet.... because of this, I think he hammered the domes first then applied the dimple effect.. In doing sothe face of the dome faceted regardless of his method, the effect is really nice and helps the diminish the slightdepressions ofuse over theyears.....
The centerconchos are where one's back would be while wearing the belt...In general, this is the area of mostdamageto domed conchos beltsusually caused by sitting in hardback chairs..... there are minor depressionson this belt as would beexpected over time, butfor the most part the depressions aresmall andnot overlynoticeable due to Ben's handhammered dimpleeffect (See Photos).... One of the great things about thisbelt is you can hang on the wall and not be afraid to wear ona night outon the town......
The belt's leather is in really good shapeand measure 43" long from the tip to the buckle axis. The beltholes start at 35" and go to 42 1/4"..... The distance between holes varies a little between 1" - 1 1/8",The buckle measures approx 3" x 3 3/4" and is a wonderfully expressive design....This is a very hefty beltweighing in at 650g or 2lb 3ozs
This a great wearable concho belt is wonderful example of a well known and repected Navajo silversmithnoted for making concho belts..... Given its age, this belt has been well taken care of and is in overallwonderful, vintage condition.... This is NOT one to pass up..... YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED !!!

NOTE:ALL photos were shot on an iPhone5. In addition, the coloron my monitor isbound to differ from yours. These pieces have been sitting for four years, somehavetarnished more than others, I have lightly cleanedthe most tarnish pieces only to thepoint that I could get reasonably clear photos. Silver used in older piececontain differentalloys thanmodern silver which is an indicator to the age of the piece. IF the piece is notstamped STERLINGthen I am assuming it is "coin" silver (.900) . None of the items I havefor sale have been tested. That said, I am a silver collector and would not purposelydescribe or sell anythingknowinglybeingless than "coin" silver. On pre-war pieces andFred Harvey your guess is good as mine on the silvercontent, the true value of thosepieces have little to do with the metal content.
