A very fine stunning rare form early masterpiece of Northern Californian basketry originating from the Maidu or Wintu Indian tribes and dating from the very early 1900's. This very finely woven basket, done around an old whiskey flask , is executed fromsplit willow shoots, hazel shoots ,bear grass and maiden hair fern to produce the stunning intricate designs that surround the periphery. The design features some rare and striking patterns in almost three dimensional effect. The basket makers skill is clearly evident in the mastering the weave around such a difficult base material. The flask stands 6" tall x 3 3/4" wide and 1 1/2" deep and is woven around a glass whiskey flask with its original metal (silver?) screw cap and is in excellent condition for its age with no damages or repairs noted..This is an excellent stunning finely woven masterpiece. Thisstunningcomplexmuseum quality basket displays very well and will make a fine addition to anyone's collection.
