Earlyoriginal 1870 Prinzen sized Iron Cross 2nd Class. The cast ironcenter shows the Prussian Crown, initial W for Wilhelm and the date 1870 in thelower arm. APrinzen sized Cross is usually 2/3rds of the regular Cross or slightly smaller.This Cross is one inch (1”) across or 26mm. It is of multi-piece construction,exterior silver ribbing in fine condition. The center does show some minutesurface rust on the obverse side. The silver jump ring and ribbon ring areoriginal to the Cross. In early 1870 2nd Crosses there was nostamped silver content nor manufacturer’s code. The ribbon ring is the standardsize for the 42mm crosses. This Cross is well made, center stove enamel notcracked or moveable, the ribbon is long gone. This has been in my German sidefamily for generations and belonged to Pasha Hermann Baron von Schilgen. Needsa good and appreciative home.

Clarification: Prinzen belonged to his brother Franze von Schilgen who served in the 6. Westfal. Inf. Regt. Nr. 55. Will provide a copy of his photograph as well as page 71 write up in German of his family and military history.
