Silver mark: Lion Passant
Date: 1867
Assay: Sheffield Maker: Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Reigning Monarch: Queen Victoria

Never have I had the pleasure of owning such a richly gilded set of flatware; the 24ct gold finish is so heavily applied it is only to the trained eye that it is revealed as not solid gold, but gilded sterling.

Gilded finishes are usually a light coating added to protect the silver from corrosive liquids but this set is all about appearance and wealth with a splendour like no other.

From a design perspective there is a number of points to note:
  • spoon and fork show large rest to heel with cut out decoration
  • Celtic cut outs and engraving to front
  • crown finial with Maltese cross mount
  • heavily applied 24ct gold plating

All of the above mentioned points form a ceremonial worthy set, perhaps for a Bishop? Retained within the original fitted case, each piece measuring 7.5\" in length and bearing a total silver weight of 158gms it is from the condition that one can assume this as never being used.

Lambert of London; a retailer and maker to Royalty truly befitting a Queen.

In very good to excellent condition with a fine patina, details as follows:
  • box shows some wear including lid is separate to body, originally there would have been a strip of leather holding the pair together
  • no tine wear
  • small mark to reverse of spoon bowl from where it sits

Length: 7.5\" approximately
Weight: 158gms total *Publications*
