Two brothers began the Torpedo Buromaschinen Werk A.G. as a bicycle factory in 1896 in Frankfurt, Germany, and expanded into typewriter manufacturing in 1907. Remington Rand bought the typewriter portion of the business in 1931 and incorporated it as Remington Buromaschinen GmbH but kept the Torpedo name for the typewriters. After WWII the company rebuilt, and under new head designer Andreas Salzberger the company released the Model 18 as the company\'s first new modern postwar design. Remington Rand began shifting typewriter production to its factory in the Netherlands in 1964, and in 1966 it closed the Frankfurt factory.
This model is serial number 1242349 and was manufactured about 1961. It celebrates the modernism of the era with its compact, streamlined design and two-tone salmon and cream paint. The removable lid over the keys has a wonderfully stylish chrome \"Torpedo\" name plate that would look equally at home on the fender of a car. It also has a rare script font that adds a dash of elegance to whatever you\'re typing! The typewriter measures 12 5/8\"D x 12 7/8\"W x 5 7/8\"H (not counting the base to which it can attached) and weighs 13 lbs, 12 oz (not including case). The case measures 15\"D x 14 1/2\"W x 7\"H and together with the typewriter weighs 19 lbs, 2 oz. It comes with the two cleaning brushes and a pack of carbon paper that were found with the typewriter.
This Torpedo is a clean example in very good vintage condition with very little wear to the finish and no dents. Obviously never used very much, it is fully functional so far as we can tell, and with a fresh ribbon (always available right here on ) it\'ll be ready for your next bit of literary inspiration! Neither the case nor the typewriter were ever stored in a basement or attic, so both are free of any mold or mildew and it also came from a smoke-free home.
This typewriter comes with its original case, which has typical light wear on the inside and out from handling and storage as well as unavoidable rubbing from the sides of the machine against the inside walls of the lid.
