Up for sale is a wonderful, HOLLOW-carved Drake Goldeneye from Ontario, Canada, we estimate to be ca. 1930-40.  The maker is unknown but was clearly very talented. It was found in a Peterborough, Ont. home along with a couple of Goldeneye Hens as well as a pair of Old squaw – all by the same hand.  Given the variability of the decoys it’s pretty clear that this maker didn’t use a pattern and likely carved for his own use.  This bird is in dry, original paint that is extremely well done.  It’s possible that that there is a slight bit of touch-up at the neck/body joint but it’s really tough to tell for certain.  The bird exhibits very good bill carving and mandible delineation.  Also has nice comb painting on the back. It has good glass eyes.  There are some rubs from use to the bill edges, end of the tail, and top of the head.  There are some scrapes and dings typical of a working decoy of this age. While the round lead ballast is long gone, it does retain the original leather anchor line strap.  All in all, this is one of our favorite Canadian working decoys, made by a hunter for his own use in the field.  Measures 13-3/4” long; 5-1/2” wide; and 6-3/4” tall.  Please ask questions or for more pictures.
