WELLER SICARD FLORALCYLINDER SHAPE FLORAL VASE ART POTTERY HAND PAINTED

Acharming little cylinder shaped hand decorated Weller Sicard vase. It has a nice iridized finish; a little like thefinish you might see on a piece of Tiffany or Steuben Aurene glass and isdecorated with a hand painted abstract floral decoration. It was made by the Weller Pottery formerly ofZanesville, Ohio.

Theshape of this little vase appears to be the same as the Sicard vase shown onpage 103 (2nd from the left in the middle row) of the book The Collectors Encyclopedia of WellerPottery by Sharon and Bob Huxford. It is also about the size and shape of the Sicard mug (minus the handle)shown at the very top left of page 89 of this book.

Ifind no trace of a Weller signature anywhere on this piece. This is not uncommon on Sicard pieces. Nine of the twenty-two pieces of Sicard shownon page 89 of the above mentioned book say they have no identifying marks. There are some marks to the underside thatappear to be incised but they appear random to me and I can make no sense ofthem – see the close-up photo of the underside.

Avery nice original piece of American-Made Art Pottery from the early part ofthe 20th century. It has beenin my personal collection since 1990. Ibought the piece from an antique dealer in 1990 along with some other unusual signedWeller pieces. The dealer told me theseall came from the family of a former worker but I have no verification forthat.

Age and Condition

Thispiece dates to circa 1910.

Thevase is in excellent original condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of mydescription of this item. The vaseappears to me to be in perfect original condition. I see no chips, fleabites, cracks hairlinesor repairs. I did examine the vase undera black-light and found no problems. It alsorings fine when I tap it with my ring. Thereis a large run in the glaze on one side of the vase and some of the iridized glazehas obscured the floral decoration in a number of places around the bottom thirdof the vase – see the photos. I did notuse a loupe to inspect the vase but see no evident crazing to the glaze. There are just some light signs of wearconsistent with a piece of art pottery of this age. Please keep in mind these photos may be blownup at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times largerin the photos than it really is.

Pleasenote: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not amark on the piece. It will be eitherjust to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on theright side of the photo.

Approximate Dimensions
