Back from the future?
Combined with Intel's new Ivy Bridge processors, there were plenty of reasons for Alienware to make its in-house luxury rung M17x a fresh breath. Can the 17-inch model win the title "Gaming Reference" again? As expected, Alienware delivers a great gaming laptop with the M17x. Picture and sound quality are at a high level, as in the past, we also found the connectivity to be successful. The modern housing scores with good input devices, convenient maintenance options and plenty of lighting elements. We were particularly impressed by the rubberised soft-touch surfaces, which are well made and give a fairly high-quality impression.In terms of quality, most competitors cannot come close to the M17x. Conclusion: Alienware confidently grabs the gaming crown once again.

Case
Weighing 4.4 kilograms and measuring 410 x 304 x 46 millimeters, the case is finished in a subtle silver, black or an eye-catching red (Nebula Red) according to customer requirements. Comparing the fourth revision with the third reveals only minimal differences visually. Apart from an additional grille on the caseback, the notebook remains untouched, at least externally. You can really only love the futuristic design with its distinctive lines and unique shape. Nobody blames the notebook so quickly. It looks extremely high quality and well made. The pleasant rubber coating of the lid and wrist rest enhances the positive overall impression. The matte finish makes the base unit relatively dirt resistant. Let's get to stability, which is above average as usual. The lid is bombproof, with background vibrations the indicator rocking back and forth minimally. Even the one-handed opening works with the 17-inch giant. No deformation on the case due to strong pressure.

Keyboard
The input devices leave little room for criticism. Alienware has been opposing the chiclet trend for years and prefers to install a classic keyboard model with tightly packed keys. The relatively small usable area of about 12 x 13 millimeters is not negatively noticeable in practice, because the keys are significantly beveled towards the edge. The manufacturer dares not experiment with the layout, the full-fledged number pad is another guarantee for a quick acclimatization. We would describe the relatively soft typing feel as extremely comfortable. Acoustically, the keyboard also performs great, numerous competitors are considerably louder or rickier. To the right above the keyboard sits a practical multimedia bar, which also serves to (de-)activate the radio module, eject the slot-in drive and open the command center. Keyword command center: The keyboard offers 4-zone lighting, which can be adjusted in detail using software. With just under 20 colors, there should be something for every taste. In addition to the keyboard, the Alienware lettering, the aforementioned multimedia bar, the touchpad and the speaker grilles can also be illuminated. Touchpad
We really liked the deactivatable touchpad. One of the biggest advantages is the incredibly smooth surface. Skin feel and gliding properties are excellent, finger movements are implemented smoothly and precisely. With an area of 100 x 55 millimeters, operation is extremely convenient. Multi-touch input and horizontal or vertical scrolling were not enabled by default on the test device, but first had to be switched on via the Synaptics driver or the command center. In our experience, gesture recognition works very quickly. Due to the lighting and the slight drop, the touchpad is always noticeable even in total darkness. Meanwhile, the two mouse buttons impress with a soft pressure response and a quiet release noise.Ultimate control from one central location
Experience games in a whole new way. The redesigned Alienware Command Center lets you select lighting and special effects, speed up game performance, monitor game results, and more, all in one central location. Alienware holds itself back a lot compared to gaming and multimedia notebooks from other manufacturers when it comes to cramming the system with dozens of and usually unnecessary programs. This means that the Alienware unfolds at full speed even as shipped. The linchpin of the software equipment is the practical, "Command Center". With the Command Center, you can not only change the lighting ("Alien FX"), as already mentioned, but also adjust the touchpad settings ("Alien Touch", more about this in the input devices) and configure the security settings ("Alien Sense").
