Every laptop runs firmware before the operating system loads. On a normal ThinkPad that firmware is Lenovo’s, it is closed, and you cannot inspect or change it. This machine runs Libreboot instead — free software you can read, build and replace yourself.

  • The Intel Management Engine is neutered. The ME is a separate processor inside the chipset that normally runs its own code with deep access to the system, whatever OS you install. Here it is stripped and disabled.
  • Intel Boot Guard is disabled. Boot Guard is what normally locks the machine to firmware signed by the manufacturer. With it off, the boot firmware is genuinely yours.
  • No vendor lock-in. No whitelist on WiFi cards, no signed-firmware requirement, no setting you are not allowed to change.
  • And unlike most libre-firmware machines, everything still works. We put Debian on this one specifically so the Intel wireless card keeps full 802.11ac and Bluetooth. You get the open boot firmware without giving up the hardware.

What we did to it
  • Installed Libreboot 26.01rev1 with an external hardware programmer, and verified the written firmware byte-for-byte against the image.
  • Fitted a 512GB NVMe SSD — a genuine upgrade over the 256GB these usually carry — partitioned as a single root volume so all 452GB of free space is usable anywhere.
  • Added 8GB of DDR4-2400 to match the 8GB on-board, bringing it to 16GB.
  • Repasted the CPU and replaced the thermal pad, and cleaned out the fan.
  • Installed Debian cleanly and confirmed WiFi, Bluetooth, suspend/resume, audio, the keyboard backlight, fan and thermal reporting and the battery charge thresholds all work.
  • Wiped. The drive was repartitioned and the OS installed from clean media, so nothing of any previous owner remains.
Cosmetic condition

Very Good to Good — normal light handling marks for a business machine, and no outstanding faults at all. It sits flat, the hinges are firm, the screen is clear and the keyboard works correctly. The photos are of the exact machine you will receive, shot close up rather than at a flattering angle.

What to know before you buy

This is a Linux machine. It ships with Debian and no Windows license. You can install whatever you like on it — there is no firmware lock stopping you — but Windows on Libreboot is not something we support or recommend.

There is no Thunderbolt. Libreboot does not support it on this model. The USB-C ports do charging and data normally; they do not do Thunderbolt. If you need it, this is not the machine.

No TPM and no hibernate. The TPM is disabled in this firmware. Suspend to RAM works perfectly; hibernate to disk is not configured.

Memory is 8GB on-board plus one slot. We have filled the slot with 8GB to bring it to 16GB. The T480s takes 40GB in total, so a single 32GB module is the upgrade path — but 8GB of it is soldered and cannot be changed.

No charger is included. It charges over USB-C Power Delivery, so any 65W USB-C charger works — the one from a recent laptop, or a $20 charger from anywhere.

In the box

The laptop. No charger, no original box, no manuals, no dock.

Warranty & returns. 30 days. If it fails in that window, send it back and we refund you in full. This machine is out of Lenovo factory coverage, so our 30 days is the warranty. Shipped in a padded laptop sleeve inside a box cut close to the machine, leaving virtually no room for error. Questions before you buy? Message us through . We would rather answer three questions than take one return. If you are new to Libreboot, ask — we would rather you buy this knowing exactly what it is.
