THESE REPORT AS IBM, NOT SEAGATEThe drive is a Seagate Cheetah 15K.5. The vendor string burned into it is IBM-ESXS and the firmware is BA25, because these shipped inside IBM equipment. smartctl will show you Vendor: IBM-ESXS, Product: ST3300655SS. They are standard 512-byte-sector SAS drives and are not locked to IBM hardware, but if your tooling expects a retail Seagate vendor string, know this going in.

ABOUT THE 17-HOUR DRIVETen of those seventeen hours are our own wipe pass. The drive reached us at 7 power-on hours. For a 15,000 RPM enterprise drive that is shelf spare territory - it was racked, powered, and effectively never used. We have no raw smartctl capture for this particular drive, only the before-and-after catalogue rows, so we are quoting its hours and its defect counters and we are NOT quoting a non-medium error count or a link rate for it. See the section below.
WHAT WE DID NOT CAPTURE, AND WILL NOT GUESS ATWe keep the full raw smartctl dump for two of the three drives. For 3LM2YTZK we hold the pre- and post-wipe catalogue rows, which is where its hours and its zero grown defects and zero uncorrected errors come from, but not the full dump. So for that drive we do not quote a non-medium error count, a link rate, or a manufacture date. None of the three reports a readable manufacture date or a start-stop count, so those appear nowhere in this listing.
The non-medium error figures above - 1 and 38 - are pre-wipe readings, because post-wipe raw dumps were not retained for those two drives. A non-medium error is a bus or interface event, not a media defect.
ABOUT THE 3 Gb/s LINK RATEBoth drives we have dumps for negotiated 3 Gbps. This is a 2008-generation Cheetah 15K.5, not a 6 Gb/s drive. Your actual rate depends on your controller and backplane, but do not buy these expecting 6 Gb/s.
HOW WE TESTEDEach drive was catalogued with smartctl before anything was written to it, then given a full-length zero overwrite of every logical block with dd until the device reported end-of-media, then catalogued again. Grown defects and uncorrected errors read 0 before and 0 after on all three.
DATA SANITIZATIONEvery logical block on all three drives was overwritten with zeros. Each wipe ran until the device itself reported end-of-media, so the pass covered the entire drive and not a fixed byte count. We then read back the start, middle and end of every drive and confirmed all three points contained zero non-zero bytes.
We keep a per-drive log for each one, and every one of the three records RESULT: WIPE VERIFIED OK. All three took about 48 minutes. All three arrive fully zeroed with no partition table.
