5.25" floppy drives, a staple of personal computing in the 1980s and early 1990s, have become difficult to find. Prices of working 5.25" floppy drives have risen to the point where it makes sense for someone to start repairing them again -- a lost art which was fairly common among computer techs 40 years ago.
For your consideration are four 360KB half-height 5.25" floppy drives, which I purchased but tested as bad on my regular Windows 10 testbed. I could have put "untested" in the title, as some sellers do, falsely raising the hope that something might work out of the box. Instead, I will describe what I know about these drives.
All four drives power on and spin. One actually boots a system, but all four give "not ready" errors when asked to read a known good diskette. One was made in Italy and three were made in Japan. All have terminating resistors installed, so that they could work at the end of a floppy cable. None have any obvious parts missing. I have not attempted repairs on any of these drives.
The first drive is the only one with a white faceplate. It has an unusual lifiting door. I pulled this Fuji Toshiba 5420A0N drive from a Leading Edge Model D. This is the drive that actually booted my testbed. However, it refused to list a directory of the good boot disk.
Two of the drives are the popular Teac FD-55BV-06-U, made in Japan with black faceplates.
The last drive is an Olivetti XM 4311 with a black faceplate. This is the Italian drive, which was originally installed in an AT&T 6300.
