This is a Mac Pro 2010-2012 model identifier 5,1, affectionately called the “cheese grater”. Cosmetically it is in good condition, with a few surface scratches as can be seen in the pictures; inside looks great as I gave it a good cleaning before listing. All parts and components have been tested to be perfectly functional except for the optical CD drive, which I have never tested. Selling because my college work requires a portable laptop instead of a desktop.
These cheese grater Macs are extremely fun and upgradable. I’ve kitted out this one with the dual-CPU tray, running dual Intel Xeon 3.46 GHz X5690’s for a total of 12 cores, 24 GB of DDR3 RAM, a fast 120 GB SSD in a PCI card, a 1 TB HDD, and a workstation Vega 64 8GB graphics card. It is very powerful and honestly feels as snappy as a new computer. In raw performance, it is very competitive with today’s consumer Macs running Apple Silicon. For reference, CPU is roughly equivalent to the M1 Pro, and the workstation graphics can outperform all but the highest end Max chips.
I have also done what is called the Pixlas Mod to this machine. Those who are interested can read up on it more online, but it is just a means of tapping the power supply to be able to run even more powerful graphics cards (like the included Vega 64) reducing stress on the logic board pinouts. With the upgraded graphics card this Mac can run as recent as macOS Mojave natively, although you can easily upgrade this machine all the way to the most recent version of macOS (Sonoma) with OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
Will include power cord in box!
