BDXL is the highest standard of Blu-ray discs, allowing for 3 to 4 recording layers instead of the traditional maximum of 2 layers, thereby enabling over twice the data storage. As of May 2020, the BDXL standard includes 100GB 3-layer discs and 128GB 4-layer discs. A BDXL-compatible drive is required to play BDXL media. BDXL-compatible devices maintain full compatibility with existing single-layer and dual-layer BD-R and BD-RE discs. To write data on a BDXL disc, you need a recorder that supports the BDXL standard.
